road conditions, border to loreto

hey nomads.

we are planning to head back to loreto in a couple of days. wondering if anyone has traveled hwy 1 after "stormin' Norman" that can advise about road conditions down the peninsula. even news about sections of the drive would be helpful.

September 27th and 28th it's wide open. No bad spots, no wash outs and no standing water in the roadway.

The green is spectacular!!
Millions of yellow mariposas will foul your windshield.
Little frogs or toads hopping across the road along with
some big caterpillars.
The desert is alive!!

No mention of road construction.....

I'm going to be pulling a 5K ton boat in the next several weeks and am hoping I don't hit the often ugly detours during road construction- very appreciative of any ideas what I'm in for from the border to Mulege?

Drove from San Diego to Buena Vista yesterday, clear sailing. A little water in the road just before Insurgentes but it was just a splash, nothing north of there.

The desert is greener than I have seen in 20 years of Baja travel. There are a bazillion yellow and brown butterflys everywhere.

sidebar: which is more, a bazillion or a gazillion? The way our national debt is going our grandkids will need to know.....ok, enough of that, please forgive my "DK" moment:lol::lol:...

It was a smooth trip, it's good to be home.....dt

The Pitayas (Pitahayas) should be fat and juicy... wish I could get back down there and feast on them!

I was looking for pitayas to buy on the way down, there was one person selling them on the road just past Ensenada and nothing after that. I didn't stop as I was sure I could find some further south and I didn't want to run the risk of losing them in Guerro Negro.

In July, they were being sold along Mex. 1 between San Pedro and El Triunfo... an early harvest of what appeared to be white pitayas. We didn't stop (in BajaTrippers 4Runner) thinking we would find one just ahead... too late!

Two Nomads already said it was clear sailing... no mention of detours.

If anything there may be the ongoing road widening into Santo Tomas?

Hey CasaMananza what kind of a vehicle do you use to pull that 5k ton boat with?? It seems to be rather large for Highway One to Mulege..Some of those bridges might not hold up to all that weight.. Thats quite a large boat for down here, too?? Just saying/??

As I was just thinking of Hwy conditions, the Nomads offer up my needed information! Headed south like so many so all your reports are greatly appreciated! Miriam could have been much worse, verdad. I'm leaving this weekend after a wonderful couple of months in Northern California---coast and mtns. Purple kush? Green BCS like Centro Americana. Bobo and bugs and waves of green. Very purple, Tio. The 6-1-12 cuttings are about 4-6 days from the knife at 3500 ft.

In another month, road conditions around NorCal will become quite dangerous for some folks!!!

Last year you could stand on an I-5 overpass and smell the vehicles that had 'hit a skunk'.:lol:

Same skunk got loose in my kitchen!

Clear sailing it is ... little construction south of San Vicente ,not bad. Then a little on the

Drove down Monday pulling a cargo trailer; crossed the border at Tecate; stayed at Baja Cactus Monday night; and arrived in Loreto Tuesday afternoon. Smooth sailing. We did count six cops (motorcycle, car and pick-up truck) on the hill out of Tecate.

Heads-up however: Our friend was pulled over in Tecate on the hill going southbound over the weekend for the egregious violation of a dog in the cab of his truck. Same thing we were stopped for earlier in the year! He refused to pay (as we did) and the guy eventually left him alone. (Cop in a white pick up truck.)

i took my daughter to the airport sunday...returned the next day

road is good...

a little construction but very little
no storm damage...very dry

the tecate crossing took 5 hours and 15 min
yes you heard me correctly
5 hours and 15 minutes WOW!!!


i figure when they closed 400 cars were turned away after waiting
work slow down!!! no special checking

13 hours to the border with bathroom breaks

Crossed at Tecate on the 2 going south. Looked at the crossing north: at 9.00 just 15 cars waiting going north.

No problemo in Tecate with the police. Didn't see anyone!:)

Easy crossing Oct 1, 8AM at San Ysidro.

No problems on the way down, very pretty and green.
