Autumn in the Eastern Sierra

tripledigitken - 10-4-2012 at 11:09 AM

I was able to get away for 4 days to visit the Sierra's before the snow falls. The aspens were going off. I shot as far north as Sonora Pass, west to Olmsted Point in Yosemite Park, and south to Mammoth Lakes/Devil's PP. The days were mid 70's and cloudless. Right up there with Baja for beautiful vistas!

OH Ken you've done it again!

DENNIS - 10-4-2012 at 01:00 PM

I lived in Maine for a while and your fall colors bring back memories. Very nice, Ken. Thanks.

Mexitron - 10-4-2012 at 01:58 PM

Beauty!

Ken Bondy - 10-4-2012 at 02:13 PM

Those are gorgeous Ken. Magnificent! And one of my favorite parts of the world. Nobody has ever captured the post pile better!

Convict Lake

bajaguy - 10-4-2012 at 02:15 PM

Great pictures, Ken.

The hike around Convict Lake just south of Mammoth takes about an hour and has some outstanding photo op's

Great pix
395 in the Fall has to be the ultimate drive in the US
Heck, why focus on the Fall,
anytime that drive is gorgeous!!

tripledigitken - 10-4-2012 at 07:43 PM

Thanks all for the kind comments!

Bajaguy,

I agree Convict Lake is a great location. This trip I tried to concentrate on locales I hadn't spent alot of time at for some time. Last March we spent a night at Convict Lake, I actually posted some photos of that stay here.

Ken,

As a photographer yourself, you might find interest in this. When I got to Devil's Postpile it was late morning and the face was dark and in total shade. I could tell though, that within an hour or so the sun would illuminate the face and make for a great lighting. So I waited until just a few facets of the basalt columns were lit and I got my shots.

Epic moonrise over Mono Lake shot. Heck, all of 'em are pretty epic.

The Aspens in all their autumn glory!

You followed perhaps my favorite Fall photo shoot route, Ken. I know exactly where you were in the Virginia Lakes shot, have stood there when the light was just like that. Made my heart sing then, and again when I saw your photograph.

Thanks for posting. A superior trip down memory lane.;D
I've been smiling since I first saw 'em this morning.

Another great location is the Aspen groves over Monitor Pass (CA State Route 89) and Ebbets Pass (CA State Route 4).........many with 100+ year Basque carvings.

bkbend - 10-5-2012 at 01:28 PM

Thanks, I'll be passing through there in a couple weeks on my way south. Hope there's still some color left.

Nena,

Glad to take you to Virginia Lakes on an autumn morning. Tee shirt weather in October, perfect!!

Funny to see the parking lot at Mono Lake almost full 45 mins before sunrise. Must have been over 20 Photogs with tripods out there.

Tip for anyone traveling through Lee Vining, plan a meal stop at the "Whoa Nellie Deli" at the Mobil station just off 395 on the Tioga Pass road. I always plan at least one meal when up there. Dinner this trip was sushi rice, seaweed salad topped with seared yellowfin tuna!!! Their lamb shanks are worthy as well.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I know many Nomads have a fondness for the Easter Sierra as I do.

I am disgusted. I missed Virginia Lakes the past two years due to a partner backing out...Love Blue Lake and Green Lake too...I am now pining for Aspens.....AAAARGH!

You are fortunate to have been able to seize these moments!

purdy spectakular shots, Ken!

Love the strategy Ken. It obviously worked. Like I said, nobody has ever captured the Devil's Postpile as well as you have here. I have been there many times (spent much time in Mammoth Lakes), and I have never gotten anything nearly as good as your photos. Bravo!! ++Ken++

Lee Vining is one of my favorite places as well. We always stop there for lunch. Alex likes the burger joint on the east side of the highway.

I agree with Nena that the Virginia Lakes image is really special. Probably because it captures the light at the best time of the day.

I like the house a lot also. Could that be Bodie? The color of the wood is really amazing in that light. I've seen weathered wood at Bodie that actually looks blue. A great place to shoot.

I really wanted to hit the east sierras that weekend but health will still not allow it. Your pictures bring it all to me so I am grateful.

Igor,

Thanks for the kind comments.

The cabin (actually there are 2) is just west of 395 a few miles south of Lee Vining.

mcfez - 10-9-2012 at 02:23 PM

The 395 corridor is fantastic. We are still finding great spots along it's route.

Nice shot of Mono Lake's moon!

bigboy - 10-9-2012 at 07:52 PM

We will be up there the end of next week. We love bouncing around on route 395, taking side roads and ending up at upper twin lake. This year we plan on visiting the bristle pine forest!

Ken
:

Just saw the cabins yesterday. They ARE just off the road. Like 50 yds!

Your photos are fabuluous and do the cabins justice. When seen from the hwy, they are just a foreground speck in the full spectacle of the Sierra's in their fall colors.

Good job! :bounce:

Plan a whole day, past the bristle cone forest is the trail up White Mountain,
It is the easiest "Fourteen" you will ever bag,
but a long day nonetheless...

RNR,

I have looked at those cabins for years, but never stopped to take a shot. This visit was all about pulling over and taking my time. I brought most of my lenses and took 90% of the shots with a tripod.

Thanks for the comment.
