passport requirement

Retireded - 10-4-2012 at 11:52 AM

bajaguy - 10-4-2012 at 11:54 AM

Yes!!!!!

Mula - 10-4-2012 at 11:57 AM

Why fight it - just get it.

mcfez - 10-4-2012 at 12:13 PM

Yes.

But you can get thru the border if you are NOT flying or cruising. Present a valid I.D......... proceed to secondary as punishment...... for a few hours perhaps :-)

bajaguy - 10-4-2012 at 12:15 PM

and get the Passport Card at the same time......will save you some time crossing back to the US

DENNIS - 10-4-2012 at 01:03 PM

Retireded....past tense of a past tense. You really are retired.

Maybe his name is Ed:?::?:

Mula - 10-4-2012 at 02:06 PM

I guess we should have first asked - passport requirement - for WHAT?

Might be another goat rope.

David K - 10-4-2012 at 03:16 PM

Exactly... none needed to get back into the U.S., but it is preferred means of ID.

Southbound, if you want an FMM... then yes, needed!

thebajarunner - 10-4-2012 at 04:46 PM

What was the question

He's going to get to that part later. He knows how easily we become confused and overwhelmed with details.

Thanks big D

Or, after having a brief discussion with the BPA, proceed straight through... as long as you have a valid driver's license and a birth certificate, that is. :)

re: passport required

Retireded - 10-4-2012 at 10:06 PM

The reason for my question is that I was led to believe that the Mexican government now requires a passport for travel outside the border zone. I have already received a enhanced Wa state driver license and have applied for a passport card. I hope that will satisfy the passport requirement. I really am Retireded. I have retired 3x now and my name is Ed. Thanks to all who responded and I look forward to meeting at least some of you in the future. We are looking into moving to Baja to stay, eventually, and it may be sooner than later.

Feathers - 10-4-2012 at 10:38 PM

hahaha!!!! Mystery solved!!!

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to answer your question.

Welcome!

Welcome to Nomads Ed.....dt

compared to life when you're stupid :tumble::tumble:

BajaBlanca - 10-5-2012 at 08:24 AM

welcome Ed and congrats on retiring 3 times. We all are pretty much in agreement that before anyone make the decision to move somewhere in Baja - rent first to get a real feel for the town. Visiting and living are 2 different enchiladas.

I guess I could have given a better answer. Perhaps the phrase should be "life can be tough" as it isn't always for everybody. Life isn't tough for me as a rule but I can usually find ways to screw it up. The phrase is usually attributed to John Wayne from the movie "Sands of Iwo Jima" but when I watched the movie I don't recall hearing him say it.

Yeah... no kidding... tell me about it!

Oh oh oh! :-)

mcfez - 10-5-2012 at 09:43 AM

Passport is required for travel beyond the border zone.....only way to get a tourist card is with a passport :-) Passports can be acquired with a expedite website BTW.

I think we all here have retired a few times :-) Hell...look at that DENNIS guy here!

There are SO many reasons to rent before buying! Listen to the voices here, about this subject.

Will your family visit you?
Do you need American health access?
Is it REALLY the seller's land?
Are the folks in the same area happy with the landlord / seller?
And a hundred other questions to ponder.

There's a saying here at the BN. Buy in only what you can afford to loose.

We are happy as hell with our dealings in Baja BTW

Good luck to you.

Thanks folks,
We plan to rent in the Mulege area for a while to feel things out and do some looking around. We are still in Port Orchard, Wa., Across Puget Sound from Seattle, running a non stop moving sale to lighten the load. Gonna drive down in a ford explorer and pull a 16' travel trailer. Hopefully, that should allow us to take our time picking a place to settle. We haven't even left home yet and are already excited about this adventure.

16' travel trailer.

mcfez - 10-5-2012 at 10:18 AM

Do make sure that you have the current paperwork on the trailer (and the tow car)!

bajaguy - 10-5-2012 at 10:22 AM

You are going to need Mexican insurance on the tow car AND the trailer:

http://www.bajabound.com/

And you will be flagged into Secondary Inspection by Mexican Customs...........they will want to look into your trailer............

Retireded - 10-5-2012 at 11:08 AM

Thanks Bajaguy, I was surprised to find I'll need both U.S and Mexican insurance on both. Not as cheap a trip as I hoped, but still well worthwhile.
Last time I was in Baja I sailed into Ensenade in '69. I'm betting a lot has changed, but I liked it a lot then and hopfully I still will. I only understand a little spanish, but my wife is fluent. She was one of the first female boxing managers in Ca. back in the early '70s and managed Mexican fighters who spoke no english. She got a crash course back then and I'll probably get the same pretty soon.

Yeah.....Terry is right on this one [a few others as well ]*. Mexico doesn't consider a towed vehicle to be an extension of the towing end.

*Doncha just love it when someone says, "You got that right".....like it's the first thing you said all day that was correct.

sancho - 10-5-2012 at 12:53 PM

Up until recently, there was a sign in the US CBP
building coming back into the US, it identified different
lines for pedestrians, one was for crossers with only
DL's/no official ID, so in theory you can come back with
no ID. On the Discover Baja site, an often quoted
source of info, it states you can get an fmm with
the Passport Card, which can be used inplace
of the Passport Book, I believe it is $40 if buying
the Passport Card without the Passport Book,
good for rentry by land into the US

my drivers license mexican insurance

akshadow - 10-5-2012 at 01:00 PM

my drivers license mexican insurance which is just liability states covers towing.

I've heard that from others in spite of conflicting info from insurance agents.

Who knows? EEES MESEECO. Be prepared for anything and everything.

Retireded - 10-5-2012 at 02:58 PM

Yeah, I have had the enhanced d.L. from Wa State for over a year thiinking it was all I would need. Then I find our Mexico now requires a pasport to travel outside the border zone. If I intended to stay in the border zone my wife would have me committed and divorce me on insanity grounds. The only constant one can count on in this life is change. I guess that serves to keep us from becoming bored.

I believe Mex Imm used the term 'Passport'required for
travel past the Border Zone as a general term.
There have been posts here that in fact you can use
a Passport Card to get an fmm (tourist card) and
travel beyond the border zone, there are posters on
this board who believe the contrary of that,
this is what Discover Baja Travel Club says on their
site, Tourist Visa
http://www.discoverbaja.com/fmt.html
Passport Card $40, regualr Passport Book approx. $130?

David K - 10-5-2012 at 11:18 PM

The passport is required to obtain a tourist card... that you are 'supposed' to have to travel south of the border zone (Maneadero, San Quintin, or the Baja CA Sur border line... we don't know for sure).

NOTHING stops you from driving to La Paz without one... unless you cross into Baja CA Sur on Hwy. 1 and the INM officer checks you... if he is even there.

David...what happens if they DO check?
