Collaboration for Marsh bird Study in Estero and San Quintin

Hey Nomads,

I thought this would be as good a place as any to throw this out.

I work with a group of government agencies and NGOs in southern California that are studying and restoring a very rare marsh bird – the Light-footed clapper rail.

We are attempting to do some legwork to determine the feasibility of doing some population surveys of this secretive but cool bird in the Estero Beach and San Quintin areas.

One of our partners has done work in San Quintin before, mid-80s, but has since lost most of his contacts.

In 2010 we had official Baja government buy-in and we will get it again - but first we would like to identify some local collaborators.

Ideally we would like to find a possible Biology/Ecology major in Baja and some local Baja environmental/wildlife NGOs that would like to work with a team of us to do some population surveys in the marshes.

Any recommendations and contacts would be greatly appreciated.

More information about our efforts and group can be found at:

Thanks in advance for any ideas or leads.

i MIGHT have a contact for you; he's been contacted..good luck...

when i was a ranger on the channeled scablands of eastern washington i had a couple of spots where i'd spotted virginia rails and man, are they reclusive...always a thrill to actually spot one and put it together with their "laughing" call.

Yeah, they can be difficult to find. We use call counts to survey them.
