"The Festival Tijuana Interzona, which began Oct. 12 and ends Saturday, celebrates the city's intense cultural life through a series of 38 events,
most free of charge, ranging from open-air concerts to exhibits, theater performances and workshops.
Among the festival's musical highlights this week are a binational encounter of ska and reggae musicians featuring groups from Calexico, Los Angeles,
San Diego, Tijuana, Mexicali, and Rosarito Beach (Friday starting at 3 p.m. on Avenida Revolución at First Street). Scheduled to perform in a more
intimate setting is the group Código Postal from the southern Mexican state of Veracruz, whose music blends bolero, tango, jazz and blues (Thursday at
7 p.m. at Restaurante Saverios in the Río Zone). Closing the festival is Lila Downs, the folkloric singer-songwriter raised in Mexico and the United
States (Saturday starting at 7 p.m. Saturday on Avenida Revolución at First Street).
Festival Tijuana Interzona also includes these events: A multimedia exhibit featuring 350 pieces by the Tijuana photographer Manuel Bojórkez (Sunday,
Oct. 14th at 6 p.m. at La Casa del Tunel in Colonia Federal); a presentation of portraits of artists on the U.S.Mexico -border by German photographer
Stefan Falke (Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at La Caja Galería in Colonia 20 de Noviembre); presentation of "Tijuana Dreaming: Life and Art at the Global
Border", a book that includes photographs and essays about Tijuana by journalists, academics, novelists and bloggers (Saturday at 7 p.m. at Librería
El Día in the Río Zone).
Other events of note this week:
Tijuana Innovadora: The 11-day mega-expo at Tijuana's Cultural Center showcasing Tijuana's potential includes conferences, exhibits, culinary and
cultural activities and continues through Sunday, Oct. 21.
Today through Sunday, Oct. 21:Festival Internacional Cultura Sin Fronteras. Includes performance of Mexican pieces by the U.S. singer Timothy Pollard,
nicknamed El Charro Negro at 4 p.m. today (Sunday, Oct. 14th) at Plaza Rio Tijuana. On Tuesday at 5 p.m., artist Carlos W Irigoyen opens an exhibit at
the Casa de la Cultura in Colonia Altamira. For a full schedule click here.
Wednesday: A conference honoring longtime UC San Diego professor Wayne Cornelius, recipient of the Aztec Eagle award, Mexico's highest award for
foreigners. The event, open to the public, has been organized as an informal gathering of friends, mentors, students and scholars who have been
influenced by the work of Cornelius, an expert on Mexican immigration. From 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the UC San Diego campus at the Weaver Center of the
Institute of the Americas.
Saturday: Native Kumiai, Paipai, Kiliwa and Cucapa will join other local producers from Baja California for a regional arts, wines and foods market in
Tecate. The event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the patio of theTecate Community Museum."
