criminal activity in Baja

R22D22 - 10-18-2012 at 07:12 PM

There are many stories and rumors about the hazards of driving in Mexico. Aside from mordida, there seem to be few reports of criminal activities in Baja. So I was surprised to hear that Federales, or men dressed as such, Set up a roadblock near Santa Rosalia and hi-jacked an RV. Does anyone have any information about this?

brewer - 10-18-2012 at 07:34 PM

Where did you hear that????

mulegemichael - 10-18-2012 at 07:36 PM

i really really really find that hard to believe; i travel that road all the time and there's lots and lots of traffic..sounds like a bad rumor.

Howard - 10-18-2012 at 08:13 PM

Please explain what you mean by "hi-jacked an RV."

Thank you

Well, did you get the 'information' you wanted?

Come here to find out about Baja from people who actually go to or live in Baja... or, believe the wild stories from people who never go or never been to Baja... the choice is yours!:light:

First hand info

bajaguy - 10-19-2012 at 10:01 AM

My neighbor's sister's cousin was abducted by aliens and taken aboard a flying chorizo where she was forced to eat lobster burritos and drink Pacificos before she was released.

She says it's a true story and I believe her although she dropped out of high school and has a really great job at Taco Bell, but has never left Fontana California and knows all about Baja California because her friend at the What's Happening Now Tatoo and Piercing Parlor told her, so it must be true......

oh ya

Don't know about the validity of this report, but I
for 1, remember a VERIFIED account of a family
fron E. San Diego County who were towing an empty
trailer that hauls, I believe a Baja Trophy Truck
1000 type, who were pulled over on the Hwy 1 Toll Rd.,
going no., some 4 mi. so of TJ, by suspects looking as cops,
truck and trailer were taken at gunpoint, the guy , his wife
and a kid or 2 were able to amke it to Playas TJ and
get to the border, so
this kind of thing HAS HAPPENED

all over the planet !!

Thanks for all the replies - even the sarcastic ones. Be clear - I did not start this rumor but it is different from others I have heard so the obvious thing to do is check it out with people who do know. Isn't that what you would do?

rts551 - 10-19-2012 at 10:54 AM

Peopleon this forum get very defensive a bout negative posts on Baja. Hang in there. You asked a question and deserved an answer. No. I haven't heard of anything like that.

Yes indeed, it has happened... I know of this incident as well. However, that was 5 years ago and crimes of car-jacking, robbery, murder are happening daily all over America.. daily.

So, why focus on the extremely RARE bad news of crime against Americans on vacation in Mexico? In fact, even that bad crime wasn't against a typical tourist family, but someone helping at the Baja 1000, who against the advice of the McMillin family, went home late in the evening towing a McMillin Race Team trailer. The criminals were obviously hoping to kidnap a 'rich and famous' McMillin family member.

It was a horrible crime, but it happens all the time in America, but almost never in Mexico to Americans.

Maybe if you could provide the source of your information or rumor it would be easier to track down and validate.

And on other planets.

Think of the abuse the martian rock that the Curiosity lander lasered is going to have to put up with when it tells it's rock friends that it was probed by an alien.

The OP's question was if anyone had heard of this,
that's ALL, this guy doesn't deserve to be mocked, no one is FOCUSED on negative Baja News,
I'm a big of a Baja Cheerleader as you are. I just don't
choose to ignore info, negative or not. I don't
understand the 5 yr timeframe you put on the TJ incident,
that has no bering on that incident. I appreciate
ALL info. Not all Baja occurances/incidents come
across BN

mcfez - 10-22-2012 at 11:01 AM

I have yet seen bad news in all my travels of the mainland and Baja. The bad does indeed happen in Baja, just as it does in any other country. Over the most part....the talk about the crimes committed in Baja are over blown and greatly told over and over and over by the newspapers....just as the American newspapers do.

A few common tips when traveling the Los Angeles, CA area:
Do not venture into the badlands such as East L.A.
Do not wear expensive Rolex watches, or wear one of those Crocodile yuppie shirts.
Stay away from the red light districts where drugs and cheap thrills are.
Don't roll your windows down when a unmarked police car pulls you over.....demand a B&W cruiser to show up.
Obey the traffic laws.

Apply these same rules to Baja!
99% of Baja is safe as hell.

I don't know about a motorhome but I do know a plane was hijacked at gun point in Mulege a few years ago.
