Bahia Asuncion

rdrrm8e - 10-23-2012 at 04:35 PM

Guys

I need to make a speed run, last minute to Asuncion.

I'll cross at Tijuana at dawn Friday. Gas up in Ensenada and then El Rosario.

Baja veteran but never to Asuncion. I am driving a ford f 150 with about 400 mi. range. I'll have 2 6 gal. cans. in the back.

Where do I turn off Mx 1 for Asuncion? Is it marked well?

Will I have enough range to get back to El rosario from Asuncion? Probably not driving much once we get there.

Thanks for any help.

Chuck

No problem Chuck. There is lots of gas south of El Rosario. In fact the landmark for your turn west off of highway 1 is the big Pemex in Viscaino Junction, less than an hour south of the big eagle at Guerrero Negro. Turn right just south of that Pemex. There's also gas in B.A.

Be careful.

gas up in vizcaino and follow the signs there.

DianaT - 10-23-2012 at 04:47 PM

After El Rosario, fill up again in Vizcaino and right after the first gas station in Vizcaino is the road that turns west out to Bahia Asuncion and Tortugas. I think, it only says Tortugas. Only main turn-off.

It is then 40 + miles to the turn-off to Bahia Asuncion and it is marked --- only major turn-off on that road. There is a gas pump in Asuncion, but it can and does run out of gas some times.

If needed, be sure to stop and get pesos in Vizcaino as there is no bank nor ATM in Bahia Asuncion. The Bancomer is right across the street in Vizcaino from the first Pemex.

And don't hurry on the Turtle Bay road, especially with the sun in your eyes, there are some suspension killing holes in that stretch.

Good travels.

Start watching carefully for the killer holes after the last farm out of Vizcaino. And there will be stretches where you think the problem holes are done --- wrong, they will appear again. Some are at the top of small hills --- just keep it slow and keep your eyes open.

Road into Asuncion after the turn-off is not a problem at all.

Thanks everybody.

First time to Baja with a huge hole in my heart.

Trying to get to Asuncion before dark from TJ at crack of dawn or earlier....

I've got Thousands of Baja miles under my belt sine 1969 and earlier

Some of it before asphalt

Chuck, Fuel in SQ instead of Ensenada, then Viscaino both directions. As an alternative, Fuel in Ensenada then GN both directions.

Here's a Baja mileage Chart

Amigo, there's family in need of an emergency ride to BA. Is this why you're southbound with a Huge Hole in Your Heart? If so go with God; if not there's people who need a ride. Drive carefully. Tio

Safe travels Chuck. I have traveled most of baja in the dark, no worries. The road between the ranches and the Asuncion turn off is not one I would do without mi full lights spread and only getting 20-40mph. It's bad.
suerte

Before you leave take a look at google earth or a map. you have a right turn to Bahia Tortugas/Asuncion in Vizcaino after the Pemex station that is on the right as you enter town.

Correct me if I am wrong, Asuncionites, but About 2/3 of the way to the coast you go left to Asuncion at an intersection, the other direction goes to Bahia Tortugas.

I don't know if it is 2/3 --- but it is the only paved highway that leaves the Tortugas road and difficult to miss. It is about 40+ miles to the turn-off and then another 25+ miles into Asuncion and on that road, just follow the paved road all the way into town.

As of a couple of a few weeks ago, they had torn our the last few miles of the Tortugas road before the turn-off and it was gravel---washboard, but good gravel --- better than the craters.

The turn off is at mile 40 or so if I recall....impossible to miss though.

BajaBlanca - 10-23-2012 at 07:08 PM

leave early and safe travels.

thebajarunner - 10-23-2012 at 08:20 PM

Easier to see potholes with good headlights than overhead sun
For sure top off at El Rosario
Gas at Guerrero Negro or Viscaino. No problems
Travel safe
Vaya con Dios

Bajaboy - 10-23-2012 at 08:26 PM

Border to El Rosario is about 240 miles
El Rosario to Vizcaino Pemez 267 miles
Vizcaino to BA 70 miles
