Best damn hamburger in San Felipe (perhaps entire Baja too).

mcfez - 10-24-2012 at 08:10 AM

I NEVER so much as glance at the so called "hamburger and hotdog" stands in Baja. The vendors simple on the most part....don't have a clue about the preparation of a American hamburger.

So I was doing business in San Felipe last week for a few days....and was showing a client a business interest......when I drove pass this "hamburger stand". Rinky-dink and hidden on the side of a market, I took notice that an American was tending the grill, and his wife was in charge of the counter.

Talking out of my truck's window.....I jokingly asked if the burgers were decent. ........and I got a response back in an deep Texas accent. Okay.....I got baited....... and I took the hook.

Best damn burger in Baja! In fact.......it became one of my best top five burgers that I have ever had. I asked him why the meat was so good.....he explained to us that the beef was specially formulated for him.......using "the fat from the heart area" of the animal. He picks up the meat from S. Ca.

Great sauce. Great cheese. Good french fries. Great service. A big menu of various burgers and other "American " fast food items.

All this.........from two folks that were in their mid seventies!!!!!!

Where? Once you have arrived to the northern part of San Felipe, slow down when you pass "POPS" Campo (that's on your left). Proceed a few thousand feet and there be a market (that's on your left)......pull in and head to the right side of the market's building. There is NO sign off the Mex 5 highway.

The bun, man.....the bun. what about the bun???? is it homemade, store bought, made at a local bakery????

What about the sauce????????....what kind, what does it taste like???

Are the fries crispy?????, soggy????.....with salt????

What about drinks?????? soda or beer?????

Come on, Fezzie........a more complete report with photos!!!!!

Tbone - 10-24-2012 at 08:26 AM

The best burgers, hands down, in all of Baja are served up by Dave and Yvonne south of BOLA. We can now end this thread.

mcfez - 10-24-2012 at 08:53 AM

Tbone......where in town is it? I'll be there soon for a vacation at Daggerts.

Okay.......shoot me bajaguy! I had no camera this run...it was business only. I did take notes and those notes are somewhere off Ca 99 ....for I lost my wallet on the way home!

The buns......all I can say they were NOT from a Mexican bakery. Size of a McDonalds big mac bun....very soft, yet not spongy. Had taste!!!!

Looked like a thousand island sauce.......not tangy but rather a LITTLE sweet. Perfect blend however they made it. Pickles and all the trimmings too.

Napkins used _ 6 units
A very good indicator of a good sloppy burger!!!!!

French fries comparable to what one would get at Denny's. Cooked well though. American ketchup on the table.

Standard soda in a can. Looked like American bought. I just wish that had Mexican coke in a bottle. Think I will tell then that next month...
Didn't take note if they had beer...I don't consume alcohol.

PS - It's located at about KM180 on the east side of Hwy5. Don't make me swear to the KM number though, I'm not sure.

1) Great Burger in Baja Sur is at Bahia Concepcion, Playa Buenaventura, Mark & Olivia's Bar/Restaurant.

2) McFez' burger place is at Km. 181 (which you can plainly see on the sign, left edge of his photo off Google Earth Street View)

Thank's Deno...

mcfez - 10-24-2012 at 12:39 PM

Yes bajaponderosa........Buckaroo Bobs! How da hell could I forget that name? :o

Yes..David.....K181. I looked and looked for the Km. sign when I was Goggling....... stupid me!

Cypress - 10-24-2012 at 01:48 PM

It's mighty easy to fire-up a burger. Put the patty on the grill/skillet. A decent patty, a nice bun, throw in all the veggies/cheese that will fit in between. You've got a meal.;D

Hey McBurger

I was down in SF a few weekends ago and was have a few beers at Pete's Camp and ran into Buckaroo Bil or Bobl. He told us about his hamburgers and told us to come down for a burger. So Saturaday afternoon we hopped in the truck and went down. Only to find a sign closed Sat and Sun? What's with that. We are going down for a big fiesta and the shrimp festival Nov 1 and we will try to shoot for a burger on Friday.

mcfez - 10-25-2012 at 08:45 AM

WOW!
Could it had been for that week end only?

Hey Blue.......tell Texas that that "kissmygrass" guy did a write up on his stand 4 me, please. And mail me a burger to my farm.......

I agree. Isn't one of the reasons for traveling to Baja, to do as the Bajardians do?? i.e. eat tacos and drink skunky beer, or do we buy American beer as well ????:lol::lol:

You two ...I love your retorts :-)

So....neither of your ever buy Coke Cola.......that American stuff.

Perhaps both of you dont buy gasoline....most of that BTW is not from Mexico..... the country has to import refined petroleum products, mainly from the USA. ......that American stuff.

In fact...I bet neither of you have never taken any sort of food stuff in those ice chests that you carry into Baja. ......that American stuff.

How bout those meds too for your health issues? ......that American stuff.

Did you get the Medical Evacuation insurance? I bet you did along with buying that car insurance from an American outlet. ......that American stuff.

Please....retort with some of believable content next time :-) Don't be so glorious on your high horses........the fall is painful from up there.
:lol::o:lol::o:lol::o:lol::o:lol:

rts551, Schlitz is a pretty good brew! Of course it's more popular down in the southern part of the USA. Guess it qualifies as a "Red Neck" beer. Makes it all the "Mo Betta". :D

From what I see, it's only the MEXICANS that drink American beer, down here. Almost exclusively Bud Light, now that it is so available.

rts551 - 10-25-2012 at 01:26 PM

Brown Derby. used to sold in Safeway in the 50=60's. Always on sale.
