Mechanic in Veracruz? (hey, I started out i Baja)

Howdy all,

It's been a while since I updated my trip thread to show that I left Baja. I hope this quasi-Baja related thread doesn't irk y'all.

I'm in Casitas, Veracruz (on the Emerald Coast) and need a mechanic to help me diagnose a potentially motor-threatening noise in my usually-faithful ride.

I'm reaching out locally but I haven't found any good sources of info online.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic or a good expat community online that covers Veracruz? I'm about 150km or so north of the city.

You could try the folks who do the VivaVeracruz blog - http://www.vivaveracruz.com/blog/

John Todd Jr. is probably your best bet. He's an American ex-pat who's been living and traveling in Veracruz for a very long time - http://www.johntoddjr.com/ Scroll to the bottomf or an e-mail link. He's also on Linkdin if you are

There is also the Yahoogroup - VisitXalapa

And if you can find him, Roy Dudley is also an American ex-pat married to a woman from Xalapa. He's lived there for more than 30 years and is very knowledgable about Veracruz.

Good luck, car trouble sucks, but Mexican mechanics are often pretty good and can usually fix things with enough rubber bands, duct tape and spit to get you from point A to point B and back

Thank you very much for the info. I'm consulting with some Toyota diesel specialists online but it doesn't look good. I disconnected each cylinder one by one and #4 was banging so hard I thought it was going to reach up and whack me on the head.

I'm going to do a bit more research to figure out what it may be but I think I need some internal engine work. I'm sure that will be fun on a motor never sold in Mexico.

On the plus side, I'm in a beautiful place.
