Hwy 1 Greenery after Paul

RnR - 10-28-2012 at 10:08 AM

Traveled from Tecate to the East Cape area five days after hurricane Paul left the area.

The road is dry and open with travel times indistinguishable from other years. All washouts have been temporarily repaired and may add a minute two to your travel time at each washout.

Loreto area appears to have had the most rain.

Houses in Mulege near the bridge have palm fronds and debris on top of their roofs (as usual).

The access roads into El Requeson and La Perla are essentially destroyed and consist of rocks and cobbles up to 18" in diameter. The accesses will need to be repaired or filled over with finer material (by somebody ???) before any kind of RV is going to get in there.

Watch out for soft shoulders. Had to pull WAY OVER to let a wide load pass between Loreto and Insurgentes. The right side tires sunk into the shoulder and had to use 4x4 to get back onto the pavement. The load was escorted by four Policia Federales and one hung back to help us with a pull if we couldn't get back onto the highway under our own power. (Now there are about fifty feet of muddy ruts hidden in the grass!)

And, the countryside is GREEN!

Amazing transformation! I remember the El Nino years 0f 97-98, everything was green in the Central Desert from the wet winter, then summer rains and hurricanes kept it ggreen and growing until the next winter.
