Mexican Revolution Day 2012

Bajaboy - 10-30-2012 at 07:58 PM

Each year I ask and each year I get mixed results. We are making our annual trek to Playa San Rafael on Saturday, Nov. 17. For the past few years, we get the pleasure of watching numerous parades along the way as they all start at different times.

This year, the holiday falls on Tuesday. Does anyone know definitively if the parades will be held on Saturday again this year? They are great to watch but make for a long day of driving as Hwy 1 is closed completely.

Thanks in advance.

I thought it was Nov. 18th. Thats why we were leaving on the 17th. We were caught in that once. Really don't want to again.

Anyone know for sure what day the parades are?

brewer - 11-1-2012 at 10:15 PM

Bump? Anyone know?

chippy - 11-2-2012 at 09:13 AM

I think its Nov. 20.

BajaBlanca - 11-2-2012 at 09:20 AM

My experience here in the schools is that the directors get together with the delgado and they agree on the day since the police are involved in protecting the paraders.

so, I think every town might be different ? or perhaps all the delegados have agreed on a date ? I bet Shari from Asuncion can shed more light on this.

willardguy - 11-2-2012 at 09:21 AM

the key is which day holds the parades. I too will be traveling south to cabo during that window, been caught in that traffic mess before. not good:(

Bajaboy - 11-2-2012 at 09:28 AM

I'm betting that the parades will be on Saturday. Each year I ask and no one seems to know. Last year we managed to only get caught by a few.

I might just try leaving earlier this year.

Zapotec - 11-2-2012 at 12:10 PM

A Mexican waitress in Ensenada just told me that it is always on Nov. 20th.

The holiday is always on the 20th yes but we're asking about the parades. Last three years, they've happened on the Saturday.

Zapotec - 11-2-2012 at 12:15 PM

The waitress said that it is celebrated, with parade and all, on the 20th, regardless of what day it falls. Personal experience? I have no idea.

willardguy - 11-2-2012 at 12:53 PM

well now im really screwed up, I just read although its always the 20th, OBSERVANCE is always the 3rd monday of november. hmmmmm, parade day????

Zapotec - 11-2-2012 at 12:59 PM

Sorry Willardguy, tell you what, I will contact City Hall on Monday morning and will try to find out.

willardguy - 11-2-2012 at 01:03 PM

I got a better idea! i,ll shoot down to ensenada and check with one of the,uh,waitresses at paris de noche!:bounce:

Zapotec - 11-2-2012 at 01:10 PM

I am serious; I was just trying to help out. When I asked the waitress, the owner of the place and other patrons agreed with the waitress.

willardguy - 11-2-2012 at 01:31 PM

LOL! im not doubting you, im just kidding about paris de noche! sort of!;D

Leo - 11-3-2012 at 07:12 AM

I believe the waitress is right. Some celebrations move to the nearest Monday but this one stays on Nov. 20.

Zapotec - 11-5-2012 at 06:53 PM

OK, I contacted the office of cultural events down at city hall, and according to them, the parades and celebrations will be held on Nov. 20, 2012.

willardguy - 11-5-2012 at 06:56 PM

good job zapotec! gracias

Bajaboy - 11-5-2012 at 07:20 PM

Okay, that is for Ensenada...the problem is with the towns on Hwy 1 between Santo Tomas and El Rosario.

We're planning on just getting an early start...

Zapotec - 11-5-2012 at 07:44 PM

Willardguy-I am glad I could help.

According to the office of Cultural Events, the parades & celebrations will be held "el martes 20 de noviembre, 2012 en todo Baja California".

So do I complain to them if I am held up by parades....I'm only speaking from personal experience. For the past three years, I have encountered parades on Saturday. Three years ago, the holiday fell on Saturday but the past two years it has not.....never mind.....

I do appreciate your effort, though.

Bajaboy, Maybe it wouldn't hurt to contact Amy Grier. Amy is the new public affairs officer in Tijuana. She is responsible for cultural affairs for Baja, Baja Sur, and Sonora.
She is a nice young lady from New Hampshire, and she recently replaced Joe Crook at the TJ Consulate office. BTW, the new US Consul General in TJ is Andrew Erickson. He oversees Baja and Baja Sur. This guy is from Oakland, CA.

Have a great trip. When we run into parades, we just love and enjoy them very much. good luck to you Amigo.

Thanks, I shot off an email to Antonio at Baja Cactus. I'm going to ask around in San Quintin as well.

Phil C - 11-6-2012 at 08:13 AM

Baja Boy, please post what you find out, we'll be on the road too. Sandwiched between the 1000 and the parades.

brewer - 11-6-2012 at 03:45 PM

Yea, please post. I think I'll just go down hwy 5 just after the 1000. That way I won't hit any parades and won't have to worry as much about the psycho drivers heading back with their trailers of racing vehicles. Those guys have really scared me!

DENNIS - 11-6-2012 at 04:28 PM

Seems as though it's celebrated on the third Monday in November:

http://www.newswithviews.com/Wall/allan123.htm

"Well, it’s called November 20th,although it’s now officially celebrated on the third Monday of November,"

Bump! Or is this now a dead horse?

Bajaboy - 11-8-2012 at 11:21 AM

I'm still waiting to hear back from a few sources. I might shoot out a few more emails later. I'll let you know what I hear.

BajaBlanca - 11-8-2012 at 03:45 PM

so I asked at the high school here in la bocana and they said that Monday - the 19th is an official school holiday and no one would "work" on that day by holding the paradeon that day. So, this year, all the parades will be on Tuesday the 20th.

Ergo, the parade depends on what day the 20th falls on and more importantly, when the school official holiday is. No one wants to "work" on an officially paid day off.

I sure hope those of you who will travel on Monday encounter no parades, but if you do, please send the complaint to the complaint department !!

Bajaboy - 11-9-2012 at 07:25 PM

Okay got word from a very trusted source that the parade in San Quintin will be on the 20th. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this translate into reality.

BajaBlanca - 11-10-2012 at 07:00 AM

I saw a post yesterday at the local high school that the official holiday for public schools has been changed to the 16th November rather than the 19th due to the BAJA 1000. I will confirm this on Monday.

shari - 11-10-2012 at 08:56 AM

here is a link to the announcement the government made to cancel classes on Nov.16th so everyone can go to the Baja 1000...wow...they did it to prevent absenteeism at work and school cause so many people dont go in to work or classes when the race comes through....hahaha.
