Best place to stay in San Felipe

soundchaser - 11-1-2012 at 03:51 PM

A little help please. Taking the wife to San Felipe over Thanksgiving weekend for the first time. I have been there for off-road stuff quite a bit and have stayed at the El Cortez. Since we will only be there 4 days was wanting to stay near town. Also, since we will be having some drinks in the evenings did not want to drive back from town.

Does this sound reasonable or would you recommend somewhere else? I am considering renting one of the condo/beach houses but then I am having to drive.

Last question, if we stay at the Cortez do you recommend one of the bungalos?

Tx

El Cortez.......is NOT my sort of place. It seems a little snob and dated.

I can longer find this place under San Felipe hotels but the name is San Felipe hotel and its less then 50 yards up the hill (on left side) from the Miramar which is the last bar and grill on the north end of the malecon. Large rooms, good security, swiming pool, etc for around $50/night.

It was $70 US per night a couple of summers ago.

Thanks for all the great info!!

I would go with what you know, the Cortez, obviously
walking distance. The only reason I would not stay
there is if I wanted to spend a little less $. Like the
El Capitain, well worn, bit maybe $45 where the Cortez
someone said $75+, there are a few condos within
walking distance, don't know if it is still called Caseys
Condos, on the beach, across the street from El Nido,
there is a place, condo type, I might try to find,
it is about 6 blks no.
of the Malecon, near Rubens RV campground,
called Playa Bonita

I paid $60 for a night at the Cortez June 2012. It was a tuesday. Used my British Airways Card and didn't have any fees. Just the $60.

We stayed at George's when it first opened it was the nicest place on the strip. Now the new owners have dumped a lot of money into the place it is even better. we take our rv when going now but if ever we go without it I would stay there.

Sent e-mails a couple days ago to get rooms for March 8&9 (San Felipe 250) El Cortez booked. Georges wants $130 a night with minimum 3 night stay. looking at other options now.

Since he said it was race weekend there is usually a lot of business for the hotels.

I have stayed at the El Cortez, in one of the original casitas on the beach. Nothing fancy, but clean.

El Capitan has the best shower in Baja. (room 52)

Sweetwater - 12-2-2012 at 10:33 AM

We rolled into San Felipe the Friday night of the Baja 250. It was our last night after 17 days of moto exploration. The place was a literal zoo. No rooms were available and prices were outrageous. We ended up in a little bungalow with outdoor showers just south of the sand hill with the party and sand drags.

I highly recommend reservations for that weekend, knowing that you'll pay more than usual. I might even recommend staying out of the center of town if you really want or need to get any rest or sleep. It was a wild scene that night.

mcfez - 12-2-2012 at 11:10 AM

Opps! Lots of open rooms except during the race events.

Ron...what's the name of that newer motel across the street from our campos?

Yeah it's a race weekend and we'll be riding dirtbikes so we need a secure location for our bikes also. We usually stay at El Cortez and are able to roll our bikes into our rooms for the night. Some of our friends are cheap bastards and opt for the low price la Chapala (SP??) I noticed that la chapala seems to be going through renovations and is shut down currently. I wouldn't mind paying Georges $130 a night but we are not planning on doing three nights so now I'm looking at other options. I'll contact San Felipe Inn next week and we have stayed at Costa Azul before as the have 24 hr security.

BajaRun - 12-3-2012 at 05:29 PM

I usually stay at El Capitain, only because the parking is safe and it is close to the Malecon. The other place I like is Las Palmas. The parking is secure, they have a nice pool area and the owner Fernando is a nice guy. The rooms are nicer and the beds are more comfortable than El Cap. but it is a little further walk to the Malecon. In fact I will probably be making Las Palmas my first choice in the future...
