enclosed trailer sin reg

merlin - 11-2-2012 at 09:52 AM

Hi all,

I will be hauling an enclosed trailer that a friend loaned me up to SD. Problem is, although the registration is current he does not have a copy with him. He did write a letter (not notarized) granting me permission to use it.

Am I going to have a hassle at the border? I hear they check sometimes when you are heading south.

Thanks for the advice, we plan on crossing the border in Tecate on Tuesday mid-day.

Get the red light and no papers on that unit.......

I was hauling a trailer thru Mexicali ten years ago......got the red light....I didn't bring the legal paperwork......was told to "go back home".

Being Mexicali....to turn around and go home requires a drive of many blocks into Mexico to reach the Ave of the Americans. I got "lost" :-) and ended up in San Felipe.

No paperwork? I would not try that.

Permit to operate (for somebody other than owner) is an matter separate from registration, IMO. As to the registration itself - isn't license plate on the back a proof?

Haven't heard of any problems going North.

I think I'm set. Have not heard of any issues going north only crossing the border going south. The owner is sending the registration to me in SD so I should have it before I head back.

If I have any issues I'll post an update.

He can scan it to you and then e-mail it...............most registrations say a copy is acceptable

NO!!! crossing into mexico they DO check registration

coming into the USA if the plate isnt registered they HOLD you in secondary

i was in secondary 3 months ago watching cars that crossed with trailers...

the border guys in mexico were checking the registration papers on EVERY trailer

they know what to look for

fedex overnites papers...do it

coming back last year to the usa a guy had a nice double axel flatbed and was detained because his plates were expired...they sent him back

We cross frequently towing a car or pickup behind and have never been asked for any papers. Going south is another thing, they usually always ask.

Must be a crapshoot and I keep winning. I have a boat trailer and a utility trailer, neither of which are required to be plated or registered in Oregon. Both have been across the border multiple times and never questioned. That includes red light stops southbound and secondary stops northbound.
