How many Nomads actually raced in Baja?

thebajarunner - 11-5-2012 at 08:22 PM

David's post on NORRA made we wonder how many of our brethren, and sisters, actually have driven in sanctioned NORRA and now SCORE events.

Would enjoy hearing some of the tales and yarns.
(No one ever drove in a Baja event without plenty of both)

I have posted frequently on my 12 years of driving pickups - lots of fun and finished nearly every race we entered....

Not me -- but I follow it vicariously. I'll be down next week pitting for a Kawasaki rider. Can't wait.

dtbushpilot - 11-5-2012 at 08:43 PM

Raced the 2007 40th anniversary Baja 1000, rode the last leg into Cabo and got my picture taken with Sal Fish. One less item on the bucket list....

my understanding is THR is using BAJA pits. are these your guys?

bajadogs - 11-5-2012 at 09:42 PM

Not me. But my Great Grandfather raced through parts of current Baja from LA to Phoenix about a hundred years ago. He was an Indy 500 original from 1911 and 1912 and was a part of the grueling "Cactus Derby" that dipped SOB around Mexicali to by-pass the sand dunes.

Corky1 - 11-6-2012 at 06:49 AM

I have raced Baja for 30 years, both motorcycles and buggies.

Started in 1971 with NORRA and ended with SCORE in the 2000 K.:bounce:

Lots of stories and great times and tacos.

Have been pitting with many different bike teams since.

There was no such thing as a Trophy Truck
Just stock pickups (Class 8) and mini-trucks (Class 7)
You went big time and had Stroppe build one, or you built one at home in your garage.
Ours started life as a construction truck, had lots of miles on it when we stripped it down.
No tube frame race car stuff in those days
But it was lots more fun..... believe that!!!

We used the Firestone "Baja Runner" tires
hence my Nomad handle.

I was the co-driver in a Class 6 race car for the 1979 Baja 1000...

It was the first time SCORE ran a race to La Paz. The previous 4 SCORE 1000s were only in Baja Norte. The last time before 1979 it ran to La Paz was the 1973 Baja Sports Committee Baja Mil (1000) and 1967-1972 it was called the Mexican 1000 and run by NORRA.

The only photo I have was when we were testing the car a week before the race...

Previous to and after my ride in the 1000, I was a pit captain for several races (Baja 1000, 500 or 'Internacional', and Parker 400). The pit team was called Los Campeones...

Here I am at my pit for the Parker 400 on the California loop near Turtle Mountain:

We're gonna be pitting next to Baja Pits for Destry with basic supplies. Any serious mechanical work will be done by them.

I remember racing from the Hacienda to El Candil one time....and another time, I raced DT Bushpilot from El Jungle back to our rental....I think I won the race with DT.....he got lost on the river road....

cocojoe969 - 11-6-2012 at 10:56 AM

Raced quite few races from SCORE races to RECORD and CODE races. Racing in Baja is something I still live for and will do as long as my body will allow me too.

TMW - 11-6-2012 at 12:23 PM

I raced SCORE on a motorcycle from 1987 to 1993 and sponsored a MC and ATV team from 1992 to 1995. Also did the Baja Promotion desert and GP series. Lots of stories to tell. I wrote about a couple of the 1000 races here on Nomad. I may do a write up on my third 1000 in 1989 since it too went to La Paz.

My first 1000 in 1987:

My second 1000 in 1988:

In the 80s I was in a motorcycle gumball race to La Paz. The time stamp from the last toll gate was your start time. We had a time clock at the hotel at the finish line. I was part of a 2 man team, most ran it solo. Winner got the cash pool. Lots of fun, not very safe.
I don't think you could do now.

Yep, I came in to the turn a bit hot and overshot. By the time I got turned around and back to the house you already had your helmet off and were wiping the snot off your face from your grueling 200 meter ride....I think my pit crew let me down at RM 100 meter otherwise I would have won.:lol:

fudscrud - 11-6-2012 at 03:19 PM

I raced the B1k in 2006 to La Paz. My section was from San Ignacio>San Juanico>La Parisima>Loreto>San Javier and ended near Insurgentes. We raced class 22 (open pro 4X) and ended mid pack in the class of 24 that year (12th). It was very "interesting" in the mtns since John had blown though there a few weeks before the race. Good times.

maybe if it had paid district points..........

I have been racing motorcycles in Baja since 2004. SCORE, CODE and other local Mexicali and Tecate races. Along with a few years of D38 races in Imperial Valley. I will be starting this years B1k 249x.

Had a real good prerun last Sunday from Ojos to Valley T. We Stopped at Belios in El Sauzal on the way home. What a nice restaurant/bar, kind of a hidden gem. I would of never stopped there but a friend suggested it. We just stopped for a couple beers and didn't eat. It is very nice, just across the street from los traileros tacos on the West side of the street.

Does competing in the annual Pete's Camp Poker Run count? A friend of mine and I won it back in 1999, for the buggy class. It was so much fun!

twgracing - 11-7-2012 at 12:14 PM

I raced all the SCORE races from 05-07, but have only done a few in the last couple years. Good Times. Will be at CoCos for this one helping Mcmillins.

bajabrant - 11-9-2012 at 06:41 AM

first race was 1973 baja 500---last race this years 1000 driving
last leg in car 111 with tom koch

PanchoVanilla - 2-4-2013 at 09:16 AM

I raced the 1975 and 1976 SCORE Baja Internacional (500) races on an Open Pro Motorcycle (Class 22) at the ages of 16 and 17.

We raced the Husqvarna 360cc and had good support. Not sure how to attach or insert a photo here, :?: but I can assure you that racing back in time when there were no radios, helicopters, GPS, etc.... it was tough, and yet we thought nothing of it.

If anyone wants to take a look back in time, the good folks at Trackside Photo have been in Mexico (Baja) since 1970 and you can view their archives by going to www.tracksidephoto.com
