Ensenada - RV repair recommendations?

Yamero - 11-7-2012 at 06:21 PM

Hola baja-nómadas,

Wife and I will be spending a week or two in Ensenada before Thanksgiving. Just wondering if this would be a good chance to have some repair done to our van-camper.

Specifically, the van-camper has two issues:
1. Black water tank - stuck drain valve
2. Water heater - completely inoperative (most likely electrical; all other propane appliances operate properly)

Do you know of any repair shop that has extensive RV experience?

I can't think of any dedicated RV shops here. There are lots of plumbers and electricians, but no RV specialists that come to mind.
We don't even have that many RV parks.

Join this forum. Pose your questions. Let the gang have at it. EXTREMELY active board.

On the black water valve, the whole assembly can be removed. Not that hard IF you have clearance.

On the water heater, it's either not getting 12v to ignite the propane or power the thermocouple or the thermocouple is bad. Easy to trace. Ask on that forum.

Thanks Dennis for your info regarding the scarcity of RV facilities in Ensenada. This time, we'll most likely drive our passenger car instead of the RV.

Thanks Hook for your suggestion to sign up with the Trailer Life forum. Long time ago, a roll of baling wire and a pair of pliers was enough to send me underneath a car to get it back on the road. That was 40 years ago. Now that I'm a bit older, I'd rather pay somebody to play with the black water tank. As for the water heater, I'll dig in with a test light and see if I can get it working.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Open Roads forum:
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm

Very active, and technical questions are usually answered with high level of competence. Your van probably falls into Class B - there is a dedicated section. Also, there is a DIY section and Tech Issues for those who like knowing what they are doing (and doing it), rather than paying for shop services. Those guys in shops need to be told what to do, when it comes to RV. Don't confuse Tech Issues with "Tech support" (help with posting etc), or "Technology corner" (electronics geeks).

There are at least three different portals that all take you to the exact same message boards; RV.net, trailerlife.com and I believe Woodall's. All owned by the same company.

Your heater is propane and a test light will not help !! its probably made by attwood .... as stated in this post the thermo coupler is is the first thing to change !! dont even test it !! just install a a new one!! 10 bucks..needs to be replaced any way !! if you still have aproblem ....RnR the regulater..if after this and you have checked for no hidden stutoff gates (valve) take to someone that knows what they are doing !! the flashpoint and BTU's of propane is not something to play with!!!.......worst case would be a new safety valve and thats rare !!!!! K&T:cool:

Hook - right, RVnet, Woodalls and Trailerlife are portals to the same forum. I knew the first two, didn't know about Trailerlife though. Yes, very active. Post it in Tech issues, be precise, and you will have more info that you can digest.
