Fundraiser for Living Roots in San Javier

Living Roots will be offering day trips to the Fiesta in small group vans with a guide who will give you background information on the history of San Javier and the festival.

Choose your day:

Dec. 1-- entertainment and vendor booths
Dec. 2-- the cabalgata, when cowboys from near and far ride into the pueblo
Dec. 3-- the procession, when the Saint is brought out of the church for a
walk through the town, proceeded by Matachin dancers.

Leave Loreto from a meeting place in town at 9:00AM, and return in the late afternoon, before dark.
Cost is $65USD, or $850MN.
Make your reservations at the Raíces Vivas booth at the Sunday market in Loreto between 7am and 11am, or contact info@lascabanasdeloreto.com or ladamianainn@yahoo.com

On your trip you will visit the new cultural center that was recently completed in San Javier, see the beautiful 300 year old mission church and learn about it's history, and have plenty of free time to have lunch from one of many food vendors, shop for locally made crafts, cowboy gear, souvenirs, regional sweets, and much more. Small groups of musicians play constantly here and there around town, and the atmosphere is festive, colorful, magical.

Living Roots, or Raíces Vivas, is a non-profit organization that is working with local ranchers and others to help preserve the mountain traditions and unique historic arts and crafts.

it sure would be cool if a reputable source would post up a paypal link. Raices Vivas is doing good work and is something we would support when these kind of posts pop up.

i guess i could donate at their website but that isn't in Nomadlandia....

Giving at the website is quick and easy, and I'll find out if there is a paypal option.

Of course you could do a website donation and note that it is from Nomadlandia :light:

It is great to see these positive responses-- thanks Woody and Blanca!

Amiga, after all the rains, how is the condition of the road? Some people would prolly like to drive up themselves and stay overnite. Good luck. Tio

For the most part the road held up pretty well, but there are a few bad spots along the steep, curvy parts. There is a section or two where the new pavement is gone, one is a long stretch-- and places where an undercut is visible, and scary. Large, heavy construction trucks are coming and going, and nothing has given way since the rain. There is one very short bit, less than 30 or 40 feet I think, that is just wide enough for one vehicle. Ordinarily not a problem, but more of one if traffic is moving in both directions.

My one trip up was several weeks ago, so my details are fuzzy. After i go up on Tuesday I can give a better road report.

One of the principal activities that takes place at this annual festival in San Javier that goes largely unnoticed by most tourists (including me, until my wife pointed it out to me) is the hookup ranchers make to mate their horses. During these days in San Javier, one will see many horses that were brought in for only this purpose.

Just something else to notice as you enjoy the fiesta.

Tio , took the road on the 10th, it is undermined in many places and some pavement was stripped away, but crews were working on repairs and the road is passable. See you up there.
The donation page takes credit cards, so even with out a paypal acct. You can still use paypal tied back to a cc. If you have a paypal card, it is even easier.

On Tuesday crews were working along the cuesta, and in the arroyos at the end of the road where the pavement isn't done yet. It appears that there will be several short one lane stretches along the way.
No problem with no traffic, but it could slow things down a little when the festival is on. The top of the road is closed right now, and you enter town by the back way.
I'm sure the police will be directing traffic in the touchy spots, and all will be fine.
Alert drivers will make the trip smoother too.
