Dogs at military post before San Felipe

soundchaser - 11-21-2012 at 07:45 AM

Are there drug sniffing dogs at the military posts on the way to San Felipe? I know better than to bring something illegal. I dropped something between the seat and center console and could not find it. Debating on removing the seat before driving down.

I think you answered your own question

mcfez - 11-21-2012 at 07:54 AM

I be cleaning my car before going to Baja. Your vacation to the wonderful sunny San Felipe beach may end up at the dark chambers of the Mexicali Police Station where life's lessons are learned......

I seen dogs there at the check point.

Also......if you been smoking dope in that car.....they DO have dogs at the American exit side that will indeed pick up on the scent.......then off you go to the dark chambers of the secondary inspection station for a few hours.

When passing through San Salvador a few days back, a soldier had a dog sniffing passengers at the airport. I notice that the dog was alerting on just about everyone, sure enough, when the dog came to me he went bonkers sniffing my back pocket where I keep my wallet, the soldier said to me," you have money in there don't you?", apparently it was a money sniffing dog. I asked him if he wanted to sell the dog.

soundchaser - 11-21-2012 at 08:03 AM

Figured as much. Off to buy a Torx bit and pull the seat out. Ya, I deserve it.

Clean it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought a little bit of weed for personal use is now legal in Mexico? Anyone tested this law yet?

monoloco - 11-21-2012 at 09:02 AM

I haven't met anyone who wants to be the test monkey for that.

Just about every US bill has cocaine residue on it. Drug dogs will hit on money 99.5% of the time.

I would suggest testing the new laws in Colorado and Washington before testing Mexican law.:yes::yes:

On August 21, 2009, Mexico decriminalized "personal use" possession of up to 5 grams of marijuana, half a gram of cocaine, 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams for methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams of LSD.[59]

Just print this out and show it to the dog. Tell 'em Ateo from Baja Nomad said it was all good.

mcfez - 11-21-2012 at 09:43 AM

Yes...but what does the law say about bringing these" legal"drugs into Baja?

It seems to me that evidence obtained based on dog searches should not be allowed based on the fact that anyone carrying currency could trigger an alert by the dog rendering results no better than a random search. The SCOTUS will be making a ruling on this soon:http://reason.com/blog/2012/10/30/scotus-considers-when-dogs-can-justify-s

Yea, two things will happen here when you show the write-up to the dog: He and his owner will make the questioning sound Scoobee Do makes in cartoons. Sore of like: Huhhhhhhhhhhhh

I tried something similar once when I had an official copy of a page of the Mexican Regulation indicating what I could bring across the border with out paying duty because I had an FM2. The person I showed it to, looked at it and said, 'I don't know about these things'. What he did know was how to direct me to the bank window where I had to pay duty.

Buy it and smoke it in Mexico, OK. Bring it from the old country, not unless the Cartel approves it.

I remember reading that Mex weed reg MAY only
apply to Mex Citizens, not tourists

Last month I saw and tested an alleged "dope sniffing" dog at the military checkpoint just north of Loreto.
Guess what? He couldn't smell anything, other than my own dog's scent.

I have a friend who trains "dope sniffing" dogs, (labrador retrievers, belgian malinois and german shepherds) and he tells me that the dogs are only good for around 15 minutes in a typical shift, and that if another dog is on board, their effectiveness goes to 5%.

I was feeling lucky!

I purchased a used cabover camper several years ago. Thought I had cleaned it out good. Real, real good. I arrived in Mazatlán opened the back door and several shotguns shells, .45 and 30-06 cartridges were rolling around the floor. I needed a bathroom right away.

I do not care to go into the Mexican injustice nor penal system.

CortezBlue - 11-21-2012 at 09:19 PM

I've never seen drug dogs at the check point. We take our dog and the boys are scared to death.
I would be more concerned taking a car back into the US. A friend of mine bought a used car and came across the border and when the dogs started going crazy with his car, they yanked hin out of the car, pushed it across the border and proceeded to rip the chit out of the car. They found nothing but one seed!!!

His car was given back to him and it cost him a few thousand dollars to put it back together.

I can tell you for a fact the AFI had dogs. The lads would back off ten feet and the handler would bring in the dog. All of the handlers spoke English at least enough to handle the dog but they refused to talk much. I saw labs, a golden retriever and a couple of shepherds at various points over the years.

Howard - 11-22-2012 at 07:25 AM

Wow, they had dogs at the American Film Institute ? (AFI)

Was it at the award ceromony?

durrelllrobert - 11-22-2012 at 11:04 AM

What makes you think that they are looking for drugs?

QUETZALCOATL - 11-23-2012 at 02:34 PM

Use to be the army had 11 post, most roving,at three they have dogs all the way down baja. Once on the way to San Felipe while Mexican friend and I took our families camping. We had 2 trucks so in each we both had a radio to talk back n forth. I went thru an army checkpoint 1st so as he fallowed- when the soldiers went to his vehicle I said over the radio"clava la coca" needless to say my friend was upset with me after they searched his vehicle.
