European Car Mechanic in Ensenada?

MsTerieus - 11-23-2012 at 02:20 PM

Dear All,

About 2 years ago, someone mentioned a mechanic in Ensenada whom they thought could fix Jaguars, but I cannot find that thread. Does anybody know of one?

Thanks.

What is the Jaguar not doing? What are its symptoms?

Some repairs are not Jaguar-specific and can be done by many mechanics, if the problem is not electronic. Not electric, but electronic, as in computer or module controlled.

If it's just leaking a small amount of oil, hey, it's a British car.

If there is/was a Jag mechanic in Ensenada, he probably starved to death a long time ago.

On the other hand, even ONE Jaguar in town would keep him in business.

You know the old saying about British cars..............

If it runs, sell it.

Thank you for your efforts, Dr! My Spanish-speaking skills are limited, but what I see in your link is (a) an article about a Jaguar model (that is newer and much costlier than mine), plus (b) a list of mechanics that seems to bear no relation to the article. Am I missing something? :?:

Funny you should ask. It broke down in San Diego, where I left it with a European Car repair shop, after being "turned down" by a couple of shops that did not have the tools (computer? software?) with which to fix it. (I had to bus back to Ensenada). The car kept stalling; it needs 2 ignition module$, which had to be ordered. (It also has an ABS problem that the mechanic will look into, once the stalling problem is resolved.)

The purpose of my inquiry is to know, in advance, where I can take the car (i.e., a place that has the tools to determine what's wrong) if it acts up again near home.

How did you know THAT, Robert? It may not be "sniffing" rats, but it STINKS to high hell of mice! They got to it last year - despite its being garaged - nested all over it, using its upholstery (and wiring coatings).

Then, about 3 weeks ago, in my new place (also with a garage), they found it and started nesting again. (I think I've cleared them out, and I leave traps in the car, as well as using an ultrasound machine.) But that's not the current (mechanical) problem.

My POOR kitty. :(

I was thinking of a mechanic who specialized in European cars. I imagine there are a few of them in the Ensenada area.

It was made by Jaguar, then a subsidiary of Ford. I actually have had few problems with it over the past 6-7 years that I have owned it.

As for selling it? In my search for the prior thread where I thought someone recommended a mechanic, I came across another thread in which I asked about the 2000 Subaru Outback I'd just inherited. You, Dennis, had advised me to get rid of it. I can't figure out why you would have advised that: It's an AWD car, on which I put all-terrain tires, and it is GREAT for this part of the world. (I admit that the Jag is another story.)

JAG vs SUB

captkw - 11-25-2012 at 01:20 PM

That's a no brainer if you can find anyone to buy the jag..2nd thought:light: just start driving the suba and get the suba service in the calif..much better for the car and its health !!! and you will much more happy over time ,money, grief Saved

I can't imagine having said that since I know less than nothing about the vehicle.

subaru

captkw - 11-25-2012 at 01:29 PM

very well built cars and have a following like toyota,volvo,roll's,bently....... the jags look nice and drive awsome but have...ummm..eh..ahh...health issue's.....trust me on this one !!! K&T....ps.almost forgot !! parts will kill YA!!

Hook - 11-25-2012 at 01:33 PM

Let me sit down before you tell me how much the ignition modules cost.

OK, I'm sitting.............

What model is this? How many miles on it? How long have you owned it?

How long have you lived in the Ensenada are? I realize you are in Punta Banda but you still have to drive it into town. I ask because I would think many Jags would be a desirable car to thieves and Ensenada is said to be a town with a high rate of car theft. Just suggesting that if the car is a thief magnet as well as difficult to get service on, maybe you should consider changing wheels, if you can afford it.

My sister used to own an XJS. It did give her problems but it sure was a pleasure to drive when it was running, so I can understand having an attachment to Jaguars.

Hook,,the mind reader!!

captkw - 11-25-2012 at 01:37 PM

LOL...see above post !!

Hook - 11-25-2012 at 01:42 PM

Keep the Soob, sell the Jag.

EnsenadaDr - 11-25-2012 at 01:46 PM

A list of mechanics were included in the ad, you will just need to call them. I believe if they were included in the ad then they probably specialize or have some knowledge of Jags. Give them a call. Mexico is not always as cut and dry as the US. Mentioning mice, I left my car at my sister's house in San Diego for a month. I had left a package of oatmeal in the car, and mice got in. I hear that mice can chew up all your electrical wiring. This might be your problem.

You ask many questions, Hook, and I'm happy to answer most. However (to all readers), I asked for a mechanic, not for advice about whether or not to sell the car, what it is like to own a Jaguar, what it is like to drive it in BC, etc. I really don't need advice on those subjects, thank you! See below (***)

*** A LOT!

What model is this? How many miles on it? How long have you owned it?

1998 XK8 convertible, British Racing Green. 43,000 miles on it. I have owned it since about 2005.

How long have you lived in the Ensenada are? I realize you are in Punta Banda but you still have to drive it into town.

*** Since January 2011.

I ask because I would think many Jags would be a desirable car to thieves and Ensenada is said to be a town with a high rate of car theft.

*** I don't drive it there (or anywhere, lol) too often. I don't know that it is a great thief magnet because (a) it is SO identifiable that a driver would be relatively easily spotted, (b) its parts probably could not be easily used or sold and (c) it has a very good security system. But you never know, and it's possible that I (not the car) could be targeted because I drive it.

Just suggesting that if the car is a thief magnet as well as difficult to get service on, maybe you should consider changing wheels, if you can afford it.

*** I have great wheels - the Subaru. The Jaguar was my "mid-life crisis, have FUN car. I'd hate to sell it, especially for what I could get for it, i.e., not that much $ (to me) compared with the pleasure of driving it - when it is not stinking of mouse chit!

My sister used to own an XJS. It did give her problems but it sure was a pleasure to drive when it was running, so I can understand having an attachment to Jaguars.

*** Yes, it is.

No, mice chewing wiring is not the problem. Last year, they did chew off some wire covering, but that was repaired, and this time, I caught the mice early on. The car needs 2 computer modules ... "ignition sensors," I believe. I do suspect that the AWFUL, bumpy dirt road between the main road and my house may have something to do with it.

Happy motoring, mysterious one. Jaguars are a unique driving experience, no question.

I just realized it was Sunday there, so I will call tomorrow. I also realized that Capt. KW was pulling my leg...there are no smog stations or Ensenada Jags or Porsche's sales. An idea though might be to call the Volkswagen dealers they might know some mechanics that work on foreign cars. Don't pay any attention to the male chauvinist comments..any woman question or comment is stupid it seems on this board if it's the least out of the ordinary or original.

Thanks for the link, Jan. I guess I'm really bad at Espanol, because I searched "Jaguar" there - (in any category), got 54 results (most, if not all of which were in MX), and found none in Baja California. There was a 2nd page of results, (after the 54 were listed), which looked more like regular search engine results and seemed to all concern Spain.

Back in the 60's I owned a XK120 roadster that I loved to drive and never had a problem with. Back then I did all my own mechanic work. Wish I still had it today (at the price I paid for it)

PS this site only lists a total of 8 Jag dealerships in MX, mostly in DF:

I don't remember ever seeing an XK120 in the 60s, but then, I just learned they stopped being made in 1954 (!?), when I was barely out of the womb. ;}

I LOVED XKEs, even as a pre-teen. I think they were my favorite cars of all time. Getting my XK8 was like fulfilling a long-time wish to own a Jaguar "sports car."

You are right Niki. I bought it in 1963 and it was a red 1954 XK120 that the previous owner had brought from England and had a fuel injection system made for it to eliminate the 3 SU carbs that where a pain to balance and maintain.
