David K - 10-30-2004 at 09:25 PM

This is a photo taken 86 years ago of a mission church in Baja. Can you I.D. it? Photo sent to me from AA and will be added to my mission web page http://vivabaja.com/bajamissions

Hints will be forthcoming... if needed!:?:

It seems to be the same mission style used by the cartoonist Jerry Meloche, who drew this for Bernie, on page 58 of 'Bouncing Around Baja'.... Does the guy drawing a map and giving complicted directions look familiar???

Here was how that same mission looked during the Franciscan period before the stone church was constructed by the Dominicans, per visiting artist Noel in 1769.

The mission church in the 1918 photo is completly gone.

A modern church is built on the same spot.

The damage to the church was attributed to the siege between American marines and Mexican troops during the war (1847-1848).

I can identify it

I think I can identify the church.

San Javier ?
2nd oldest in Baja

Hi Synch, thanks for guessing... below is San Javier. Which is the original Jesuit built church... a very special place.

The mission church I posted a photo of at the top of this thread is no longer there. A modern church stands in its place, facing the town square.

Final Hint!

The mission was the southern most in California (today's Baja California peninsula)...

I know

academicanarchist - 11-4-2004 at 08:48 AM

Is it La Paz?

synch - 11-4-2004 at 01:34 PM

Yes,
I was in San Javier 3 days ago and although it was a lame guess and I knew better,
it was truly my best guess at the time...

If you know that San Javier is the 2nd oldest Mission in Baja, perhaps you know where the OLDEST mission in Baja is?

The Answer...

The southernmost mission established in California and the one in the top photograph was SAN JOSE DEL CABO

The oldest or first successful mission in California is LORETO.

Before Loreto, attemps to establish a mission were made at La Paz ('Guadalupe') and then at San Bruno (15 mi. north of Loreto). San Bruno lasted three years. A photo taken there is at http://vivabaja.com/bajamissions
