Whale Watch Trip

liknbaja127 - 12-6-2012 at 07:48 PM

We are planning a trip down south to see the whales sometime in Feb. Does anyone know when the best time in Feb., would be? Early, middle or late? We will be meeting with friends to plan our trip south this weekend. Any help on the best time would be great.

Hola...timing depends on which lagoon you want to visit. The peak at Ojo de Liebre, the biggest lagoon with the most whales...up to 2,000...is mid February to mid March. You can camp there or take a tour from town.

the later the better as the calves are bigger and more playful the later in the season...but I would try to avoid Presidents Day Weekend as the lagoons are a zoo then...packed with tour buses and way too many people

You can see whales later in the season further south at San Ignacio or Mag Bay until the end of march.

If you want, you can join one of our Nomad whale trips that I guide. They are alot of fun and we are flexible with dates and activities. We also tour the salt works and bird watch as well...and dine in GN together. You can U2U me if you are interested.

Hi Shari
How is the whale watching on New Years day?

BajaDanD - 12-6-2012 at 10:56 PM

We will be going down the 1st week of Mar. 2013
Last year was the first year in many years we didnt get down there to see the whales. And wouldnt you know it, it was one of the best. DAMN!!! This year will be the 1st year we didnt get to go to Baja at all, in 15 years.
Not much whale watching going on New Years Day

This whale season will begin Dec 15-2012, endoing April 30th-2013

The first weeks for the whales are for resting and grassing. This years forecast its variable, some say itīll be less whales due to some decreasing density of food in the northern icelands, others sound very promising as the waters around here remain kinda warm and by the time our guests arrive, thereīll be plenty to eat for them and a new generation of mexican baby whales.

I highly recommend you to use a local tour service, here in GN we depend of the tourism as the second cash income, salt works being the first. So every service we provide for you its food on our tables and cash flowing in our town.

Some news from last years season: we have a paved road from HWY 1 to the entrance of the salt ponds, also the Mexican Home of the Gray Whale in Ojo de Liebre, the project developed by the Ejido Benito Juarez has been certified under the Mexican Official Norm NMX-133 for providing an ecofriendly service in their tours and their facilities.

from what Im hearing is that now they have rules and regs..aka no more petting....I sometimes forget how lucky I am to see whales and all critters near the surface..but whales are a danger to me on my boat and also all sailboats cruising around the world.....dont forget to bring a nose clip for whale watching...LOL...K&T:cool:

there usually are a few whales in Ojo de Liebre and you can get a boat out New Year's day and maybe see some newborn calves which is pretty cool....and some big pregnant mammas too which can be friendly as they wait for their babies to be born...there is always an awesome New Year's Eve Dance at the big dance hall beside Banamex...with a hot live band, ball gowns etc...although if you go to the dance chances are you wont want to whale watch the next morning:biggrin:

no worries, there will still be hundreds of whales in all the lagoons even if births are down a bit.

Shari,
That would be cool to do around new years, maybe not exactly new years day, but the day after!
Do you have to book ahead for a boat? What is the average cost?

shari - 12-7-2012 at 11:39 AM

if you drive to the lagoon it is $40 I think a person

Bajagypsy - 12-7-2012 at 11:50 AM

Thinking a road trip may be in store for this next trip!
