extra tire

bacquito - 12-11-2012 at 10:34 AM

I crossed into Mexico via TJ. The inspector inspected my truck and noticed I had a spare tire in my camper. She asked if I had another spare and I said yes and she informed me that I was only allowed one spare. I explained I wanted two spares in case I had a flat in a remote area. She let me pass but suggested I leave the extra spare in Mexico.
Has anybody else ran into this problem?

DENNIS - 12-11-2012 at 10:36 AM

If the extra was unmounted, they don't like that.
Glad you charmed your way through.

EnsenadaDr - 12-11-2012 at 10:54 AM

You can't have a spare tire now? What will they think of next?

Like I said.....they don't want to see unmounted tires. It makes them think they may be for sale.
This is nothing new.

Really? What about the segundas that make their weekly haul from the US and sell everything at their stores in Mexico and don't get pulled over?

They pay. Ask them.

Used tire shops used to bring down truckloads of tires for resale, but the government put a stop to that around fifteen years ago, about the time Mexico started producing tires.

EnsenadaDr - 12-11-2012 at 11:57 AM

Still Dennis, one extra tire, give me a break, no one is going to get rich off of that. It's ridiculous...US Customs doesn't care about an extra tire.

sancho - 12-11-2012 at 11:58 AM

I believe you are allowed just enough items, of
anything, that Mex Customs considers for personal
use. I remember a story of a few women going
to that Tecate Spa place, they had a few boxes of
shoes bought at an Outlet Mall, Mex Customs
tried to impound the shoes as contraband.
They have been known to question taking old clothes intended as charitable donations across

We're talking about Mexico Customs:

"I crossed into Mexico via TJ. The inspector inspected my truck and noticed I had a spare tire....."

philodog - 12-11-2012 at 12:52 PM

I was amazed last year when a Mexican Customs Inspector told me I couldn`t bring in my full 5 gallon can of gas. She let me pour it into my gas tank though:?:

EnsenadaDr - 12-11-2012 at 01:12 PM

Now that you mention it, yes, it is ridiculous.

Your gas cans must be EMPTY going into Mexico... otherwise you deny the income to the Mexican government's PEMEX monopoly.

I once had my blue water container sniffed to make sure it wasn't gasoline! This was at Tecate, years ago when U.S. gas was cheaper than Mexican...

thebajarunner - 12-11-2012 at 05:06 PM

All of these come back to the same simple issue

MORDIDA

They would not ask if they did not have expectations
Christmas is coming

willardguy - 12-11-2012 at 06:27 PM

imagine the look on little faces when they unwrap that spare tire! priceless:biggrin:

Marc - 12-11-2012 at 06:44 PM

For years I carried two mounted spare tires and one unmounted. and never had a problem. I no longer take filled gas cans into Messico. I was questioned about one full can a few years ago but since I had another five empties she let it go as USA always carried emergency.

liknbaja127 - 12-11-2012 at 07:33 PM

We take 2 spares every time we go, never been question! yet. they did asked
about the amount of beer we had with us once, told them we had a thirsty race team,
they let us through!!

bajalearner - 12-11-2012 at 09:07 PM

Last week, I crossed at San Ysidro from SD to TJ on my motorcycle with two new m/c tires in open view on the seat and luggage rack. They passed me through without question. It was the new Mexican crossing complex with many many young people working the site. I suspect the training is not very good with the employees.

I once landed in Loreto with a load of donated clothes for hurricane victims. The Mexican officials would not let me bring them in for fear I would be selling them. We were at a stalemate until I asked them for a large metal barrel. They asked why and I told them I would just burn the clothes and then they would not have to worry about me selling the clothes. They finally let me pass.

DENNIS - 12-12-2012 at 08:47 AM

OK....just as in other scenarios at the gate, some people arn't presented the full picture and are waved through. Good deal, for them.
Others are treated by the book as I was. Returning from Chula Vista Discount Tire store with four new mounted tires on my vehicle, along with the old [but still Baja good]tires in the car . I was going to give them to my worker.
They flagged me into secondary and told me of the problem. No unmounted tires past this point.
I wasn't in the mood to fight for them so I pulled them out of the car and stacked them next to a trash can saying, "Here. Keep them." That was it.

It was just my luck of the draw for that day and it could happen to anybody.

A family member brought several Boxes of used clothes when questioned they told the customs offical the clothes were to be donated to the Poor People. His reply was there are no poor people in Mexico and wouldnt let them cross.

I've wrecked tires on few occasions in Baja and have had to buy a used tire from Lantera's out in the boonies . Going rate seems to be 30-40 USD for a a very sketchy looking bald tire (15" LT) - good argument for carrying an extra mounted spare.

20 some years ago

captkw - 12-12-2012 at 01:06 PM

I'd bring boxes of 38.and 22. cal bullets and all the eye glasses I could get (used)...now I just try and pass and raise no red flags..the 38's went to the cops..(sjc) and the 22 went to ranchers..the glasses went to the sokalo,,umm socalo, umm ok,, town square....

David K - 12-12-2012 at 03:24 PM

A rock put a big hole in a new tire between El Huerfanito and Gonzaga Bay in 2002 (driving fast, at full pressure)... the Rancho Grande Tire shop had a perfect size spare used tire... so I didn't worry about no spare for the rest of that trip. Viva Llanateras!
