Last weekend we celebrated Jana's birthday by spending a long weekend @ Hotel California in Todos Santos.
One of our intents was to visit some of the legendary surf breaks in the area.
Problem was that there is NO BEACH ACCESS with 15 or so miles of coast near the area.
A little north and west of the hotel, there is a turtle preserve (so designated by the tourist map available locally. We drove our rental car and
managed to get 600 feet from the water and had to hike over a sand dune. The sea was really rough, and there were HUGE waves that were breaking really
close to shore.
Disappointed, we drove further south and follow every dirt road that looked like it could head for the beach. At the nort end of Pescadero, we took a
dirt road that followed along the wash. Some bikers were camping there, and there was a pickup with a camper on it, But the water still was a few
hundred feet away. The surf was still angry.
We followed several more dirt roads and came across one that had a sharp drop-off from the pavement. It was at the south end, just as you left
Pescadero. About a mile later, we managed to make it to a lot where the fence was broken, and managed to drive to the edge of a bluff. Walked down
the rocks, 10' or so, and were rewarded with the view of a pod of whales 300 meter off shore...just frolicking, jumping, puffing, etc.
We saw tails, heads, fins and their long bodies. What a sight!
And totally wild!
The surf was still angry and breaking right on the shore sand.
What we found was approximately 20 miles of beach (north and south of Todos Santos) that either was fenced off, or had houses near the water and also
fenced or walled off.
Beach access was literally non-existent.
Much of the beach area north of Cabo was fenced off also.

And some wonder why we try to minimize the impact on some remote surf spot. The secret
is to get to know the guys that have closed the area.

we drove right up to Pta Lobos. had a great time watching the fishing tournament and band play right on the beach.

You missed Punta Lobos. Plenty of beach access.
And San Pedrito? Beach access there too.

There are actually a lot of good beach access points between San Pedrito and Los Cerritos, you just need to know where they are. Next time you are in

The idiot that has the beach concession at Los Cerritos, the areas most accessible beach, has taken to charging $5 usd to park in the fenced in lot.
Up from $20 p last year. The lot was nearly empty last time we drove by. Locals parked outside the fence and walked in and surely didn't buy and of

There are 5 beach access points in TS that I use regularly. None of them are marked. We also have large barrier dunes along the beach and they add to
the beauty. So at all accesses you still have to walk over the dunes. I walk the mutts down to the beach in the mornings and it is usually empty
except for other dog and horse lovers excercising in the solitude. I sincerely hope they dont pave over the dunes to make access easier for those not
