Collared Dove

Russ - 12-15-2012 at 07:47 AM

Over the last 3 years or so I've noticed a change around my feeder.
At first the morning dove out numbered the white wings. Then the white wing took over. Last year I had 3 collared doves and now there are over a dozen. I can understand why the west coast has no season on them. They're aggressive, eat a lot more than the others and their numbers have increased FAST.

I have a lot os them here in Punta Banda too. Always thought they were called ring neck doves.

poloma's

captkw - 12-15-2012 at 09:54 AM

a ton of them out by santiago !! they used to have a airport and the rich & famous would fly in and stay at the hotel palomar and go shooting doves as sport...........anyway they didnt kill all of them and they thrive in the desert around santiago........K&T...wish I could put footnotes in here..shooting a helpless bird with a shotgun is not very sporting IMO

There is a difference between the ring neck and the collard dove.

I just looked it up.

Hunting is a sport/resource management source and dove are good eating. This Dove season the whole west coast was open to taking unlimited numbers of the collared dove. They appear to be pushing the morning dove out of their niche in many areas. for me dove are the hardest to hit. Lots of shells and few birds. No threat from me there. Or,it appears, anyone else.

For once the Captain is right. When I want dove for the dinner table I soak some bird seed in rum, sprinkle it out near the feeder when the dove are in the area and they die quick and drunk and happy. I hate violence and I love dove when they are cooked right.

Osprey,,Agreed !!

captkw - 12-15-2012 at 11:08 AM

mulegemichael - 12-15-2012 at 11:35 AM

the eurasion doves are by far the most aggressive!...we have seen their population explode up north in wash. state also...mostly whitewings here in mulege yet but i'm sure it won't take them long to figure out how to fly across the water from russ' place in chivato

Paloma :light:

talk about sporting

durrelllrobert - 12-15-2012 at 11:36 AM

When I worked at China Lake a bunch of us used to set up lounges on the south side of the Ridgecrest cemetary and just llay on our backs, 12ga in hand, and wait for the dove to fly in for their afternoon drink of water during the season

The Eurasian Dove is an Invasive species. They are taking over habitat at a high rate. Arizona has no limit year round in an effort to lower the numbers.
As far as taste the Eurasian is larger and milder than white wings or Mourning Doves. And yes they are very beautiful...

captkw - 12-15-2012 at 09:32 PM

I dont hunt myself any more...but when I did for birds it was quail and piegens !!! and I'm not talking about city runts !! atop a 150 FT redwood tree most hunters never got them !! A Pegion on top of a redwood makes hunting a Sport Why,,as soon as they heard anything they just fell..you have to shoot below were they are loften !! pheasents in the delta's of calif. are a good choice..just wrap in ALUM FOIL so they dont dry out..duck's are IMO mud hens for food around these parts at least from what I have tastest...with A 22. cal air rifle you can hunt in the forest and NOT scare the game....THe FISH BURGLER !!! LOL>>>

willardguy - 12-15-2012 at 09:44 PM

uh... is that true about soaking bird seed in rum??

Osprey - 12-16-2012 at 06:25 AM

It is true. I don't do it, but it works. Birds cannot tolerate alcohol.

Russ - 12-16-2012 at 03:31 PM

I'm falling for the Rum trick but the dove just keep eating and my expected dinner plate is empty:fire:

Russ - 12-17-2012 at 03:59 PM

Two days and they love the rum soaked food with no ill effects. Dove pre-marinated in Captain Morgan's sounds really good. Any other bright ideas?

captkw - 12-17-2012 at 04:08 PM

Note to self: Never read one of George's posts while drinking a soda. Now I gotta go find a rag to mop up my keyboard and monitor.

Day 3 Captain Morgan feeder

Russ - 12-18-2012 at 02:05 PM

Words out there is a party and it's all you can eat a drink.
Getting a little crowded?

There's room for more. Move it!

Don't sink the ship, Mates!

This is better but not as fun.
