Do I really need to get health certificate for my dog? Best Anejo Tequilla?

marina - 12-17-2012 at 03:10 PM

Been traveling to Baja for past 8 or so years but only drove down for my first time this year. Heading down again starting Dec 27... I got a health cert for my dog last time but nobody asked me for paperwork and friends have told me not to bother as they've never been asked? What is the opinion here as when I lived in the Caribbean this was a huge deal.

Also, a few years back I came across an amazing anejo tequilla that I think was made my El Jimador but it had a raised silver fake metal label on it. It was only around $25-30 in some hole in the wall liquor store and I haven't been able to find it since (have had friend look at big stores in la paz for me). Any recommendations for nice anejo that has rich caramel color, has no kick at end, is super smooth and affordable? Got my first taste of some tequilla aged in burgundy wine barrels for six months.. amazing,no kick and no hangover!

Thanks in advance for any advice:-) Marina in California

Martyman - 12-17-2012 at 03:23 PM

Going to Mexico, once we were pulled over to inspect our vehicle and asked about dog certificates and I pulled a thick folder with of vet records and offered it to the officers. They didn't even look - just waved us on.

Going north, we were pulled over into secondary and had to wait while they got a chip reader to check our dogs' info. It was a roving task force looking for illegal animal smuggling.

These jerky ICE officials were rude and offensive, despite the fact that our dogs had San Diego licenses on their collars; they put us through the whole power trip, "We can hold you as long as we want" routine.

nbacc - 12-17-2012 at 03:49 PM

I agree............the first time you do not have it will be the first time they ask. I have been though many times over the years and never been asked..........I would not dream of going without it. Nancy

tiotomasbcs - 12-17-2012 at 03:55 PM

Health Certificates are needed if you travel by airplane. Make sure to carry records of rabies and all the rest! You can;'t bring any dog food back or they will put you in secondary. There are a few Nomad Tequila affecionados!? Oh Yeah, Bienvenidos to Nomads--Welcome. Tio

Dog papers

tehag - 12-17-2012 at 03:59 PM

I have crossed with dogs many times. Never been asked to show the papers, which I always have current and with me. Luck is nice, but unreliable.

Here' Another Story About Dogs at the Border

Gypsy Jan - 12-17-2012 at 04:09 PM

The U.S. agent looked in our window and admired our Great Dane service dog.

He didn't ask for papers, but wanted to chat.

He said that the week before, he had stopped and inspected a Mexican plated vehicle towing a long, metal windowless trailer. He asked the driver to open it and there were four giant dogs (his description) chained to the four corners of the trailer.

He just chuckled and didn't seem to have a clue that the cargo was obviously fighting dogs going north to fight for others' amusement.

It made me sick.

people, and I use the term loosely here like that should be shot in ankle and dropped of in the middle of the baja Desert to slowly die and feed the mexican airforce......

Dude, chill, that's pretty harsh....maybe look into better meds..?

MMc - 12-17-2012 at 04:56 PM

marina, I know noting about dogs, Tequila, I have enjoyed once or four times. Try 30-30 at room temp. When it's cold it will taste average, but at room temp another story. Very good, very smooth, about $15.00 per ltr. check it out. 30-30 can be found in many stores but you do need to look.
The 30-30 lever action was the firearm of the last revolution. It is been praised in more then one song. Americans tend to draw other conclusions by its name.

I second tiotomasbcs' statement. When flying, it's a must (certificate within 5 days of entry) coming into Mex. Out, they don't ask anything. (just flew back)
Driving, we have never been asked, either way, north or south.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. We carry auto insurance always, needed it once.

Is the tequila for you or for your dog?

Dog info

bajaguy - 12-17-2012 at 06:43 PM

Get a copy of your dog(s) health records, to include all vaccinations from your Vet.

Take several photos of your dog and put them on a USB memory stick, take the stick with you......never know when you will need photos.

Order two pet ID tags like this:

http://www.boomerangtags.com/store/list.php?A=S&ID=27

One in Spanish and one in English with contact/reward info.

The one time you're asked for papers you can say: well, nobody is ever asked for papers. Why are you asking me?

Get the papers. Why is that a problem?

RenoJoe - 12-17-2012 at 09:44 PM

It depends on how much you love your dog and how much you respect the law. A health certificate is no big deal to get from your vet.

dtbushpilot - 12-17-2012 at 10:44 PM

We now have 4 animals that travel with us. Health certs run about $100 each in the US, about $30 in MX. You need them when flying but we have never been asked north or south driving. We keep shot records handy but don't bother with health certs any more. Remember that rabies shots need to be administered annually in MX but good for 3 years in the US. We crossed at Tecate 2 days ago and nothing was said about the animals. I've heard of people having their pet food confiscated but we have never been asked about it, we probably cross about 6 times a year.

marina - 12-18-2012 at 06:07 AM

thank you so much everyone for your help. I think I will bring my papers and just go with that... in a 14 year old car loaded with gear so don't think I'll be getting much attention., Plus this time driving down with boyfriend. At the checkpoints, they tend to want to chitchat with the single girls...

Also will try the 30/30 -- thanks for the tip... but no more? I got a bottle of Don Julio this last trip and just wasn't near as good....

Hook - 12-18-2012 at 07:06 AM

I dont cross at any Baja crossing much anymore but I have been asked twice for my dogs papers, crossing into AZ, in the last five years.

What are you looking for in an anejo? Strong oaky-smokiness? Sometimes that translates into a rather harsh flavor. Many arent really that smooth to some. For that reason, many prefer reposados to anejos.

If you are NOT into the smoki-oakiness of tequilas, I would strongly recommend avoiding most Herraduras and Corralejos.

Of the reposados, I like Milagro, Don Julio, Cien Anos, Don Eduardo and Hornitos. The reposado by Patron is, by far, the best tequila they make, IMO. But I havent seen that in Mexico; I think it is only for export. These can be pretty mild tasting tequilas; maybe too mild for some.

I've found the first silver I've ever REALLY liked. Don Julio is marketing a 70th anniversary silver. It is incredible. Like miruvor. At Walmarts in Mexico, it's 460 pesos, so it's not cheap.

There are a number of relatively inexpensive tequilas available commercially down here. Azul is one. Another is El Compadre which I have found for only 50 pesos/liter down here. Very drinkable, especially for a mixer, at that price point. Probably the weakest of the bunch as a sipper, but not bad, really.

Our dog papers experience:

20+ years by car crossing at either TJ or Tecate = never been asked

20+ years by plane FLYING with dogs into or out of LAX = mandatory

We always carry the records of our dogs shots to have proof they are current. Flying, we always ALSO get an international health certificate for each dog. Landing at LAX with animals requires one to go to the agricultural inspection office (if they are open). If you land after hours or on a weekend when their office is closed, you simply have to show you have the papers for each dog when you exit customs.

Bajajorge - 12-18-2012 at 10:27 AM

Been asked once crossing south in 12 years for my dogs shot papers and dog license. All I carry is the paper showing he has rabies shot, and his county dog license paper to prove ownership.
Best tequila, El Jimador Anejo, about $26USD depending on exchange rate at a local mercado.

Here in Calif., you can't get a dog license unless you prove it had rabies shot... So if your dog has a license, then it had its shots.

captkw - 12-18-2012 at 01:42 PM

I know that !! but that license has nothing to do with "proof" of ownership...And BTW thats almost funny,,, that anyone would think that they would ever need/want proof of dog ownership !!! And as Far as I'm concerned I don't own a dog ...She owns me...LOL...K&T:cool:

I would always do what the law requires. you will look foolish telling the officials that you did not because the Nomads told you not to. some times they check and some times they dont:?:
