No, but you aren't that far off.

Puertecitos got started in the late 1950's... I have a 1919 Baja map with "Agua Charley" on it, where later it was called Agua de Chale... before the name was changed to the current one, about 1967.

Maderita - 12-19-2012 at 11:13 AM

Rancho San Jose is more commonly known as Meling Ranch.

Just goofing with you DK, probably spmething that 3 nts
on Shell Isle wouldn't cure, although I understand in
winter San Felipe barely breaks 60 degrees.
Muertos Bay was my hangout in the late 80's- '90's,
I think it is Bahia Suenos

Nope... Ensenada (bay or harbor) is short for Ensenada de Todos Santos, from the Spanish days.

It is perhaps a very hard one... as I found it in a 1950's Baja guidebook.

I will give you some clues:

Colonia Revolucion was also called El Crucero before versions of the present name were used.

willardguy - 12-19-2012 at 02:28 PM

for my free copy of "missionary's gone wild" is it BOLA?

David K - 12-19-2012 at 02:31 PM

No, and it isn't Willard Bay either (or any bay for that matter)!

Hints: Baja Sur, a large city

Maderita - 12-19-2012 at 05:45 PM

#1 Salina Vizcaino - Guessing that would be Guerreo Negro for the nearby saltworks and Vizcaino Penninsula. Makes sense to me anyway. ??

OK

captkw - 12-19-2012 at 07:19 PM

# 4....La Paz.................

David K - 12-19-2012 at 10:07 PM

No, it was the early name for Ciudad Constitucion.

willardguy - 12-19-2012 at 10:17 PM

david, we all knew that just wanted to see if you really did.
now for my free copy of "missionary's gone wild" before 1954 guerrero negro was known as salina vizcaino. (maderita nailed it)

Yes ! Winner!
Before 1957 that was Guerrero Negro and just a tent camp at first .

Thanks for pointing out the answer given. I am on my phone tonight and typing and viewing is difficult .

Maderita - 12-19-2012 at 10:31 PM

Have we answered #1-5 correctly? (oops, a typo on Guerrero above)

May I add another name to the game?

#6 - "Alaska" is the old name. Sometimes used as a stand alone name, but most often with a preceding noun, as in, " ___ Alaska."
Keeping it more difficult by using only "Alaska" for now.
Back in the 1970s, it was often called Alaska and even noted on signs at the Pemex and restaurant. It seems to have fallen into disuse, and I miss the cool name. Located in Baja Calif Norte.

Note to DK, hold up for a few minutes to see how many know this one, lol.

willardguy - 12-19-2012 at 10:43 PM

rumorosa?

Maderita - 12-19-2012 at 10:54 PM

That was fast willard!
Yes, La Rumorosa. Campo Alaska was built in the 1920s as a retreat for government officials and military post, to escape the heat of Mexicali. The 4,000' elevation at the top of the Cantú grade was much cooler, hence the "cool" name, or so the story goes.
The old stone fort has been restored and is now a museum.

David K - 12-19-2012 at 10:59 PM

Sounds like somebody has the Lower California Guidebook!?
Please continue!

willardguy - 12-19-2012 at 11:08 PM

well theres still an alaska campground,a alaska restaurant, a alaska liquor store, a alaska surf shop, okay just kiddin bout the last one, but its coming!;)

Dang, I knew that also... but, when I was there it was not as glorified as it is in this photo.

No guesses?

David K - 12-29-2012 at 11:42 AM

Baja Angel is at the San Fernando Velicatá, the first Franciscan California mission and founded by Junipero Serra in 1769, located between El Rosario and Cataviña. Photo taken 8 years ago.
