I've noticed over the holidays markets selling and people buying sugarcane. what are they doing with it?:?:

I think the stores carry it year around.
I was driving in the middle of the night through the Sonora Dessert and saw in the distance a cane field being burned off. It must have been ten square miles of flame. I thought it was the end of the world.

Its for the "Ponche Navideņo" or "Calientito", a tasty variant of the xmas punch. Its a brew with sugarcane, dried grapes, tejocote (manzanita relative), guava, apple, cinnamon, prunes and sugar, tipical for cold weather. Almost every city and every family have its own recipe.

Also sugarcane its very popular for the piņatas and aguinaldos,

It's also harvest season - last month - for sugar cane.
