expired passport

pangamadness - 12-30-2012 at 11:45 AM

Can anyone tell me if you can cross the boarder Mexico to US with an expired passport?

David K - 12-30-2012 at 11:49 AM

Yes... use alternate Photo ID too, but an expired passport still shows you and your place of birth.

Now, going south into Mexico and getting an FMM on one has been denied by some Nomads.

Exactly: to get legally into MEXICO, you need a valid passport.

To return to the US, you need a valid driver's license or birth certificate and patience.

That seems to be the case for day-trippers as well. I came south a week back and after the customs guy looked under the hood [he never did look in the car], he wanted to see registration and my passport. He had no idea how long I was going to stay.

I guess this is the last nail in the coffin for the young night revelers partying on Revo in TJ.

Passport

Thanks everyone. I have everything I need but a friend only has a expired passport. I can always leave him in Mexico if there is a problem. We are headed to Gonzaga so we do not have to pass through Guerrero Negro. Safe travels to you all.

That reading of Mex Imm regs seems a VERY rigid interpertation,
I can't imagine a visitor to TJ/ Ensenada for 2-3 days, if he was to ask
Mex Imm at the border about Imm rules he would be told
to go back to the US because he didn't have a passport.
I'm not saying that is not PRINTED in the Mex Imm regs,
I just can't see Mex Imm applying it as is stated, we all know to get an fmm, one requires a Passport or as some
have reported sucessfully getting an fmm with the Passport Card

agreed, but what is said gringo asked for a 180 day?

Passport!!

captkw - 12-30-2012 at 06:10 PM

Hola,,unless something has changed !! its has Always been that you did not need a passport unless you were going further south of Ensanada..and even that is not the end of the world if you get caught south of Ens. depends on the wind,,time,,stars,,tides,,sky,,beer temp. ...catch my drift... PS...sorry I started this post at the bottom..Hmmmm.....all my life baja did/does not want a passport from the border to south of ensanada...That is a simple fact and I do not know if that has changed in the last month or so ....I would not think so...as they want the tourest to come down on weekends and spend the cash !! K&T:cool:....darn..I just read the first post..YES,,you can come from Mex returning to US..they want you to have a PP,,ands its for the better if you do,,but if you dont,,you will get thur with basic docs and some folks come back with nothing..aka car was stolen with wallet...there is a bit of a gray line...

Passport

pangamadness - 1-25-2013 at 11:56 AM

had a great trip to Gonzaga Bay. Turns out I forgot to bring my passport and had no problems getting home crossing at Tacate. My friend had his expired passport and that was not an issue either. Did not even get sent to 2ndary. I had a backup plan to have my wife bring it to me at the boarder if there was a problem. For the rules people I always plan my trips with a valid passport and tourist card. Plans dont always work.

glad it worked out for you.

BUT wish they would fine people w/o passports and proper ID, because as long as inspectors tolerate noncompliance, the longer we have to put up with long lines at border. if many are xing border with no compliant ID, it's just slowing down the process, and making longer lines for the rest of us.

i bet if passport requirement was enforced with a penalty, people would learn to travel with passport, inspections would be shorter, and border lines would be shorter...

I've wondered about a fine of some sort, unenforceable
I imagine, read some time back approx 70% of people
crossing back have the required ID. Some form of ID
that would cost nada seems the only way
to get compliance

of course it's enforceable! issue a ticket on the spot. person does not pay, court issues a warrant, past due fine referred to collection agency, etc.; people will pay, compliance will be quick once word gets out. right now people don't comply because there is no penalty.

if 30% are crossing w/o proper ID, then inspectors are wasting time on 30% of people, causing pain and suffering to the other 70% waiting in line!

I would have told that Aduanero to crawl inside a Xerox machine and replicate himself.

Stays less than 72 hours do not need an FMM.

If asked I would take 20 minutes to find a "misplaced" FMM. Smile and apologize, and stall and stall, and shake hands, and stall. This drives them freakin' NUTS. But a person has to be extraordinarily polite while pulling off this stunt.
