Puerto Nuevo Number II

Gypsy Jan - 12-30-2012 at 07:38 PM

It is a very attractive space, the vibe is energetic and friendly and the waiters are eager to please and seem to be having fun.

The menu is more extensive than the other places - #II offers octopus, mussels or whatever is fresh that day that the chef found and then there are chicken and steak and hamburgers-for-the-kids options.

Years ago, at Christmas time, we took guests there for dinner. I put my purse on the floor and then left without it. The next morning, we went back to the restaurant and they returned my purse from under the cashier's counter. It was sealed in plastic and all my cash, credit cards and everything else like irreplaceable family photos was intact.

Our waiter from the night before refused any reward.

So, we went back a few nights later, when he was on duty, and had dinner and left a very sizable tip.

Add edit: The drinks are good - full bar with strong and tasty margaritos made with fresh lime juice and I think they still give you a complimentary shot of Rompope after dinner.

BUT, if one of your requirements is an ocean view, this place is not your spot. After dining, you have to go outside and walk two blocks west for that.

Thank you for posting the link Jan.

Since the article mentions that "today, Puerto Nuevo boasts more than 35 side-by-side restaurants" - yet only mentions 8 by name (some under same ownership), and "talks up" 4 of those... I'm uncertain if it's a comprehensive review however.

:tumble:

Well, Maybe "Comprehensive"

Is a slight overstatement, but the restaurants named in the article have been mainstays in their ownership, location and quality of the experience for well over a decade.

The smaller restaurants seem to come and go or change ownership so reviewing them is a "maybe they'll be here tomorrow or maybe they won't", so I think the article really highlighted the dependable places.

I can think of a dozen restaurants we've tried and liked, only to see them close after season or two - for example, there was a sea captain who opened a restaurant on the very edge of the cliff that the huge three-story Ortega's restaurant looks out on. His food was good, expertly prepared catch of the day. Sadly, he closed after six months.

Ortega's has a second, oceanfront restaurant on the south end of the village that opened a while ago, but we haven't tried it yet and it might be gone by the time we get over there.

Also in the "come and go" category, currently there is an ATM in Puerto Nuevo on the southwest end near the above mentioned second Ortega's but, again, it might not be there tomorrow.
