where is everyone ? there is no one here, the malecon is being completely redone and no cars are allowed on it. Auggies is the only place open, apparently.

You answered your own question....

Cold, windy and the malecon is tore up.

fish101 - 1-2-2013 at 05:05 PM

Kinda early for all the old folks to be out drinking at Augie's..Free food at 4PM will bring them all out..The malecon will be that way for a while. Its already taken them over a year to get that far. By the time they finish they will have to start over, as it is in need of repair already at the other end..
Sorry we missed you guys at Augie's....

Pompano - 1-2-2013 at 05:19 PM

Augies, always a stop for good cheer.

Funny, the malecon looked good enough the last couple of years, but glad to hear it's getting a facelift anyway. We'll check it out later this winter..hopefully.

bajadock - 1-2-2013 at 05:54 PM

Good news is Loreto is redeveloping. Downside, like fish101 says, is that it will take forever.

During my first/only visit to Loreto Oct 2012, enjoyed the town very much. Will return and hope those businesses that were still open survive.

BajaBlanca - 1-2-2013 at 06:19 PM

well, glad to hear that we were a couple hours early ! next time we shall plan for happy hour ...

the malecon is one huge mess. and we were here a year ago and it was fine, the lady in Auggie's said this had been going on for a year and you guys confirmed this.

we did hear a lot of folks speaking English so tourism is alive .... I really like Loreto. I like the charm.

Paula - 1-2-2013 at 09:38 PM

Although it has taken some time, the finished center part of the malecon is beautiful! I sure haven't seen that repairs are needed yet.

Work has picked up on the south end recently, they are moving fast right now. On the north end a pretty, low rock wall is being built along the beach, and you can see progress daily. The road ed is being prepared too.

The previous "update" was about 6 years ago, and really it wasn't an improvement at all, with ugly sidewalks and and a scaled back look to a formerly pleasant area.

ligui - 1-3-2013 at 06:00 AM

I Was just down to loreto and was surprised to see that the malecon looks almost the same as it was before . :tumble: What a waste of time and money . Only part that is different is the middle .

Thought that it would new and better ,same old look

rhintransit - 1-3-2013 at 07:33 AM

the malecon was fine before someone somewhere decided it needed improvement. the mess has been going on for over a year and has driven several business out of business. but everyone still manages to find Augies!
one thing Mexico is good at building is ruins!

sad thing is, those photos are not the worst of the nightmare...they are actually a HUGE improvement on the last twelve months

[Edited on 1-3-2013 by rhintransit]

ncampion - 1-3-2013 at 09:15 AM

Not much progress from two months ago when I was there.

vandenberg - 1-3-2013 at 09:50 AM

And......the same old sewer stink on the corner of Juarez and the Malecon.
Must make the sale of those condos a cinch:biggrin::biggrin:

BajaBlanca - 1-3-2013 at 03:36 PM

sad to hear that these photos actually portray an improvement ):

Paula - 1-3-2013 at 04:37 PM

Drama Queens!!!

Still in business on the Malecon:

Los Mandiles with excellent Mexican specialties breakfast to dinner
Islas Loreto with the best seafood in town, also open breakfast to dinner
Mediteraneo with it's beautiful view of Isla Carmen and good food and drink
Hotel La Mision
The Giggling Dolphin, not on the Malecon but up Juarez-- great food
Hotel Posada San Francisco
Las Cabanas de Loreto, great Hotel just off the Malecon on the south end
Sukasa, a lovely hotel, and the bonus of Roberta Henry's amazing art studio.

The pictures don't tell the whole story-- go down and have a look!

elizabeth - 1-3-2013 at 04:44 PM

What Paula just said! I'd been thinking of saying much the same thing, but she beat me to it!

I also do not understand the criticism of the redo...the finished part is so much more beautiful than it used to be, and it was pretty beat up before. The pergola at the end of Juarez is a great spot and the blue sails at the entrance to the marina are a great touch.
The north end is open, and there are cars...and as Paula said, lots of open businesses.

bill erhardt - 1-3-2013 at 05:01 PM

Paula.....Ate at two on your list this week with my visiting son. Both on the malecon, and walked less than a block from where we parked both times.
Negotiating a route to the launch ramp with a tandem-axle trailer, however, requires a bit more planning. It's a good idea to do reconnaissance the night before to see what might work.....

Loretana - 1-3-2013 at 06:54 PM

I'm with Paula, too. :saint:

I remember what the malecon looked like in 1973, so I'm impressed with the job (albeit, lengthly!) they're doing........

ncampion - 1-3-2013 at 07:23 PM

I don't think anyone is complaining about the finished product, just the logistics of the construction. Why couldn't they have torn up one side of the road at a time, finished that, opened that up to traffic and then completed the other side? NO NO, they shut down the entire road and then take months and months to complete the project. I remember days going by without seeing any work at all. Yes the businesses are still there, but they must be significantly down on income. I know a lot of people who won't put up with that inconvenience just to have a meal. It's just stupid planning on the part of the city.

Didn't realize you were around that long ago.
I remember in those days you almost needed 4 wheel dr. to negotiated the waterfront. Sandy dirt road, with only big boulders holding the sea at bay. Old Presidente, Alfredo's, Mision hotel and Oasis pretty much it in those days. Loved it though! Good old times!

I came here in 1970 by sailboat and remember the same sights. Nothing paved in the whole town. Anyone remember the old movie theater with no roof? I think it was the building near the ISSTE market is now?

Ed, I was a young hippie in a Volkswagen Westphalia Camper passing thru on my way home from Mazatlan, via La Paz on the Ferry.

My boyfriend and I stopped in Loreto to cool off and went swimming off the big rocks which were the town jetty....now our illustrious "Darsena" or fishing harbor. I was impressed back in 1973, too!!:saint:

Go back to the original version, which is an option (top right corner) and you just respond to the pop up asking what you don't like about the new version is that you want the upload resizing options. :light:

BajaBlanca - 1-4-2013 at 09:31 AM

Trust me, that was the very first thing I did when I tried to find the downsize option a couple weeks ago. Maybe if we all complain, they will listen.

The weird part is that my monitor shows the photos just fine !

back to the thread: I am glad that businesses are hanging in there. foot traffic must be down though .... I could not find the entrance to MikKasa - but now I realize it must be on the malecon and I was looking on the side? I understand that the owner used to be from OB (my old stomping grounds) and I just wanted so say "hi".

LaTijereta - 1-4-2013 at 12:18 PM

This was taken from the early 80's..after they installed the first wall..
Looking South by Tio and Ann's trailer.. Before the wall was built, we used to launch over the rocks right in front of their trailer...

New construction is coming along "pico - pico"

ncampion - 1-4-2013 at 01:34 PM

Great old shot, I'll have to look over my old photos, I'm sure I have some from 79 - 80.

A little further down the malacon..

Jamie and Gary's condos were on the market...
The garages were an after thought, and built later...

Well, the 'new photobucket' finally hit me with no option to go back to the old, with upload options. So, until I find it or it is added, here is how to make our photos fit:

HOW TO RESIZE PHOTOBUCKET PHOTOS FOR BAJA NOMAD WIDTH:

1) Place your mouse arrow on the thumbnail photo in your Photobucket Album, a gear symbol will appear in the photo thumbnail to edit (or select edit for the photo if already there).

2) Click EDIT and let photo load on the page that appears.

3) Above photo, click RESIZE button (above photo).

4) Width and height values are shown with a padlock between them. The padlock is there to insure you don't distort the photo when you change one of the values (it 'locks' the width to height ration to remain correct).

5) If the photo is over 800 in width, replace the figure with 800, 640, or other smaller size. No need to change the height figure, it changes automatically. Photos that are already smaller can be made bigger, as well. The quality may be reduced when enlarging, but not when shrinking.

6) Click Apply and Save (if you check the small box provided you can replace the original, over-size photo with the Nomad-friendly photo, otherwise you will have both sizes in your Photobucket album).

Use the original version, click upload and you get your choices. Somehow the new version doesn't give you that option.
