Favorite stretch(es) of road along the peninsula?

BajaNomad - 1-2-2013 at 11:06 PM

Was driving a road today, and realizing it's one of my favorite stretches of road along the entire peninsula.

I'll mention it later.... but, what is - or are - your own favorite stretch(es) of road along the Baja peninsula?

;)

David K - 1-2-2013 at 11:13 PM

Here's three I like (for Hwy. 1):

Along Bahia Concepcion.

The boojum and boulder region of Cataviña.

Around San Bartolo

BAJACAT - 1-2-2013 at 11:14 PM

Mex 1 to BOLA is one of my favorites, also Loreto-Constitucion,El rosario-cataviña.
Hate Santo Thomas-San Quintin,Guerrero Negro-Santa Rosalia

Barry A. - 1-2-2013 at 11:21 PM

I have 4 that stand out------------

(1) the area north and south of Catavina along Mex.1
(2) The stretch of Mex 1 along side of Bahia Conception
(3) The drive from El Barril (just south of San Francisquito) to Rancho San Miguel down La Fortuna Canyon and stream.
(4) the old road into Bahia de los Angeles from Mex 1 thru El Desengano

the straight aways near Pedregoso.

BigWooo - 1-3-2013 at 07:00 AM

The entrance to Tres Virgenes. I've never driven it, but I just like the way it looks:

el mirador vicinity, the overlook and the sliding hwy 1 overlooking ocean.
santo tomas valley, quite a grand valley as you travel southward on hwy 1 and climb out of valley.
valle de los cirios, what's not to like about watching boulders and cirios and cardons passing window on drive down hwy 1?
and best of all the long climb from hwy 1 up to SPM park.

Udo - 1-3-2013 at 08:37 AM

I just drove that road last week...and it has been REPAVED!

Forgot to answer the question:

Same three as DK.

The boohum and boulder region is now more spectacular since they removed all the graffiti.

rhintransit - 1-3-2013 at 08:44 AM

cresting the rise south of Nopolo/Loreto Bay and then on towards the Mirador, dropping into El Juncalito...always looked like coming home to me...

shari - 1-3-2013 at 08:53 AM

my favorite bar none is the one from the Asuncion turnoff to Asuncion...it means I'll be back in paradise in a half hour!

my favorite stretch for scenic is the road into San Borja through the boojum forest

my favorite hair raising road is into Agua Verde

BajaDixon - 1-3-2013 at 09:15 AM

Through the Catavina area.

Coming into San Borja mission from the hiway to BOLA

Dropping into Aqua Verde and driving south along the coast

From San Francisquito for about 12 miles toward El Arco

Calamujue Canyon outside of CoCo's corner

bent-rim - 1-3-2013 at 10:30 AM

Mex 1 south of Loreto along the coast. I like how the Islands have the same sedimentry layers as the landscape on the peninsula.

Calamujue Canyon and the sandy two track that takes you to the station wagon.

The road to BOLA where you first see the view of the islands. Everybody I've taken down that road wants to stop as soon as they see them. I tell them to hold out for 5 minutes and we'll pull off to the view point to the left.

Canyon Raymundo from Mulege to Scorpian Bay.

Pretty much any road once I'm about 50-60 miles south of the border, it's Baja.

pappy - 1-3-2013 at 11:15 AM

catavina zone, bahia concepcion and some paths that lead out into the desert here and there.

DavidE - 1-3-2013 at 01:53 PM

San Jose y San Miguel de Comundu. Prettiest place, Agua Verde.

J.P. - 1-3-2013 at 02:00 PM

Any where the road follows the Coast, I never tire of looking at the water. The desert is great but I lived in the desert most of my life.

[Edited on 1-3-2013 by J.P.]

I'll pick three

tripledigitken - 1-3-2013 at 02:29 PM

Valle de los Cirios and Catavina

Views of Tres Virgenes

Bahia de Concepcion

Frank - 1-3-2013 at 02:38 PM

DK nailed it, with the exception of the US/MEX border crossing @ TJ headed south.

mcfez - 1-4-2013 at 11:48 AM

South of San Felipe is a great road........to Puertecitos.....then to Gonzaga Bay....and down to Bahía de Los Angeles. Most scenic drive........full of islands and wild life. Very few humans :-)

David K - 1-4-2013 at 11:54 AM

Nice stuff... I was thinking only along Hwy. 1 with my answers... but when I think of all the roads, it sure opens up some stretches of beauty... and some of you have named some of them!

toneart - 1-4-2013 at 01:19 PM

I agree with Tripledidgetken. Nice photos, too!

I would like to add the dirt road from Mulege, West over to the Pacific. Beautiful scenery!

Doug, Glad you are getting your Baja hit!

Lee - 1-4-2013 at 01:44 PM

El Rosario to Cabo followed by Pescadero to Cabo. The new 4-lane doesn't get any better.

geez...don't make me choose...concepcion, for sure...catavina area a must see...the layered mountains south of concepcion north of loreto...east cape around cabo pulmo, punta arena area, and on and on.

comitan - 1-4-2013 at 07:22 PM

The 1/4 mile dirt road leading to my house in Comitan.:o:o

Bajamatic - 1-4-2013 at 07:42 PM

catavina boulder fields

Curt63 - 1-4-2013 at 09:07 PM

Not necessarily the favorite, but this is real Baja

El Arco to PTSFO

acadist - 1-5-2013 at 06:17 AM

:yes:The Sea of Cortez:yes:

Ken Bondy - 1-5-2013 at 08:05 AM

Too many to pick one. But schmoozing with the Army is always fun. This is a little north of Catavina:

My favorite Roads in Baja...

David K - 1-5-2013 at 12:33 PM

... often look like this:

That take me places like this...

Curt63 - 1-5-2013 at 12:40 PM

Now wait a second.........
In November on the way home I turned of the road to go to the beach with the sandbar to the island (El Requision I think) in my loaded down Mercury Mountaineer. The road was much worse than in the past, because of the storms of course, but there is nowhere to turn around. After a little while wandering around the deserted beach another small suv with canadien plates pulls up. Nice older couple but the first thing they said, 'we heard the road was impassable but saw you down here from Hwy 1'. That Merc has taken me anywhere I want to go, even without the Toyota logo and premium price.:light:

micah202 - 1-6-2013 at 08:12 AM

ahh,,BAJA,,,,,any road less traveled!

...I love following a little track off the mainroad when I -know- it'll lead me to a secluded waterfront campsite with a whole new set of adventures....even if I -have- been there before!!

Mexitron - 1-6-2013 at 11:41 AM

Love the road to the San Pedro Martir, the road from Hwy 1 to La Huertita, the drop down Canon El Mano, and the road from Jesus Maria up into the mountains around Pico Sandia. First half of the Pole Line Road is nice too.

TMW - 1-6-2013 at 04:46 PM

Any dirt road is my favorite, I'm not picky.

mcfez - 1-6-2013 at 06:15 PM

micah202 - 1-6-2013 at 09:04 PM

....peurctecitos 'highway' back in '87........

...a 5 day grand adventure!!:O

BajaBlanca - 1-6-2013 at 09:15 PM

I like the drive between la paz and the east cape for the combo of mtn and desert flora.

I love the bay of concepcion - requeson is gorgeous.

the eastcape area (los barriles -buena vista and espthe drivedown to cabo pulmo) really takes the cake for me in terms of sheer stunning beach beauty.

Les likes the drive down to ensenada via the toll road and he likes the rocky part of the road near Catavina.

BajaBlanca - 1-6-2013 at 09:17 PM

Punta Abreojos is also such a gorgeous bay. The drive along the malecon is really spectacular.

These are gorgeous shots Ken, and of some my favorites views.

Wooo and I can't be the only ones who comment when we drive by : "can you imagine waves breaking off all those little points? It'd be the most perfect place on earth." sigh...

oladulce,

Thanks very much.

BajaNomad - 1-7-2013 at 03:47 PM

I was curious how many different stretches might be mentioned multiple times... not that most are a great surprise. Also on my "list" would be:

- El Mirador to San Miguel along the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road.
- Cataviña area.
- Conception Bay.
- At the top of the hill dropping into BOLA.
- Los Barriles.
- El Camino Rural Costero, especially around Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes.
- Hwy 1 to Agua Verde along the SOC.

As well:
- Highway along the mountain ridge south of El Rosario - I always enjoy that view.
- Hwy 1 south, coming around the corner to see the palm trees of San Ignacio.
- Salt flats (when easily passable) south of Laguna San Ignacio.
- Road from Hwy 1 to Misión San Javier.
- Road from Misión San Javier to Misión San José de Comondú, and dropping down into San José de Comondú - the view from up above.
- Hwy southwest from La Paz to Las Ventanas, coming over the rise at the top of the hill to view all ahead/below.

And the road I was driving that made me think to ask the question in the first place?:
- The paved highway from La Paz to Playa Balandra & Playa Tecolote.

Thank you for sharing your own favorites.

Skipjack Joe - 1-7-2013 at 10:09 PM

These rocks shot so beautifully by Tijereta driving south to north is one of the great landmarks of baja. A visual feast.

http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=43002

Other unmentioned great stretches of highway:

1. The first view of the Cortez as you descend the highway towards Santa Rosalia.

2. The view towards Isla Carmen from the highway just over Juncalito.

3. There's also this marvelous view of the east slope of Tres Virgenes from the top of the highway as you are about to descend into Santa Rosalia. The magic hour is just before sunset.

But, I agree, nothing surpasses the view from the rise before you drop into BOLA. That's a 10 in my book.

BajaHawk - 1-7-2013 at 10:36 PM

So many favorite stretches.
1) Catavina boulders area
2) The drop down north of Santa Rosalia - the first sight of the Sea of Cortes
3) Three Virgin Volcano region

Skipjack Joe - 1-7-2013 at 11:16 PM
