Burrrrrr. At 11 a.m. this morning it was 21 degrees here in Big Bear Ca. what is it where you are in Baja??

monoloco - 1-11-2013 at 12:35 PM

So cold, the lawyers are walking around with their hands in their own pockets.

Pompano - 1-11-2013 at 12:39 PM

It looks like 55F in Mulege...small winds...clear skies

...this report from a thousand miles north.

One of our Mexican friends in town thought it was exceptionally cold this year. However, I believe it to be the sameas every winter. But than, I love the winter season here.

Hook - 1-11-2013 at 02:33 PM

Over here, I think the days in Nov/Dec have been a bit cooler, but the nights (until about two weeks ago) have been very mild. This is due to a combination of clouds that have made their way from the Pacific NW or, alternately, from the south.

In the last couple weeks, the air behind the Pacific cold fronts or high pressure over the Four Corners area has begun forcing some cooler air towards us. Still, the lowest overnight low I have recorded is only 47 F. Last night we were back to relatively warm, moist air as this latest front (that had some Pineapple Express air in it) produced an o'night low of only 62 F.

The next three nights might test new lows, though. Still, nothing threatening the 30s yet that we have seen the last couple winters.

shari - 1-11-2013 at 02:57 PM

too dang cold thank you very much....geezo....I had to wear socks the last couple weeks!

64 degrees right now...windy too...might as well be in Canada (not)

Bajagypsy - 1-11-2013 at 02:59 PM

Ummm, it is -32 here at the moment, I will trade all of you!:P

monoloco - 1-11-2013 at 03:07 PM

A balmy 82 with rain showers here in Puerto Cabezas Nicaragua.

DavidE - 1-11-2013 at 03:26 PM

Forty-seven point three at 6:18AM this morning, with wind gusts 14 mph out of the NNW.

This was supposed to be an El Nino year, warmer and wetter in the US west coast.

But no matter what, when properly outfitted with blankets and warm clothes ANYWHERE in Mexico just beats the tar out of anywhere in the USA IMHO.

In Need

MrBillM - 1-11-2013 at 03:28 PM

Of a little Global Warming right now.

BajaBlanca - 1-11-2013 at 03:29 PM

I am sure it is in the 60's here too but with the wind which is really blowing right now, it is uncomfortably COLD. But I would not trade with bajagypsy for even a second. and since I complained LOUDLY about the heat last summer ... I am only whimping kinda quietly about the cold.

mike odell - 1-11-2013 at 04:42 PM

Here in La Ribera, we don't do degree's, in the winter it's either balmy,
brisk, burrrrr brisk, breezy, or duct tape your damn hat on.
Summer is warm, or unpleasanty warm! We don't use the H word, as it
might bring a 200 mph wind storm.

Marc - 1-11-2013 at 05:11 PM

Where is this "global warming" when we need it.

Weather in Baja...no use guessing it.

Pompano - 1-11-2013 at 05:19 PM

From my Baja journal.

1983 Feb. Pta. Chivato.

Windy and freezing! Today was the 5th day of ice in the wash basin at Casa Grande, Pta. Chivato. Campers are being sandblasted on the beach with heavy NNE winds..gusts to 60mph. Lost our solar hot water panels from Casa Grande roof. Ferry service out for a while due to high waves.

Saw snow on Three Virgins and talked to a store owner in Santa Rosalia who told me he had not seen snow up there since 1949.

Manuel’s farms and others in the Mulege valley suffered frozen crops.…losses are great.

Old Doc says, Don't knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while.

tripledigitken - 1-12-2013 at 10:18 AM

It's interesting to see the high/low US weather readings in the paper. Many times it is Death Valley/Bodie.

Bodie's low forecast today is -13 F.

vgabndo - 1-12-2013 at 10:47 AM

Ten degrees here this morning, and just a degree colder at 5500 ft. We have had almost NO melting of the Christmas 3 1/2 feet of snow. By Monday our high is supposed to get above freezing.

I put a heater in the camper to make it habitable for inventory and packing. That melts the inch or two of fresh snow we get now and then.

I'll have to do something before it freezes the door shut til spring!!

3 inches of snow yesterday, 7 degrees last night at Topaz Lake, haven't heard from anyone though in San Felipe about frozen dog water bowls yet.

Maybe that's why it's a ghost town.

It is 24 here in Olympia right now with a forecast high of 37. Wish I was in Baja right now. The 50s and 60s sound downright balmy!

Terry28 - 1-12-2013 at 11:58 AM

Big Bear this morning, 6 degrees!! supposed to "warm" up to 30....Climate change in action!!

DavidE - 1-12-2013 at 12:08 PM

I wonder if I can get that really thick clear or almost clear plastic down here? By boxing in the porch, it can really make a difference (sun porch) after the sun has been up awhile. It would be nice to shed this foul weather coat for awhile and enjoy the sun.

You may get a chance, yet, to see snow on Las Tres Virgenes. Monday morn is supposed to see 1C with a thirty percent chance of precep.

Sweetwater - 1-12-2013 at 12:24 PM

It's not that cold yet(edit: 14F).....scheduled to see -5F in the next 48 hours.......but the snow totals for the past 48 hours are around 30" in my yard and on my driveway....which means my back, shoulders and thighs are sore from the workout. They're calling this the "upside down storm", more snow below 8000' than above it.....I could use some global warming about now......or just a good moto ride through Baja:!:

Infant death is evident in the graveyards here as well. The body is interred and marked with a crude, whitewashed wooden cross painted with a name and dates, and around the grave is placed the slatted sides of a crib, as a fence. I assume that is to keep the digging scavengers away from the soft dirt.
In time it all disintegrates from weather and deferred attention as life
goes on.

redmesa - 1-13-2013 at 10:41 AM

26 F here on Vancouver Island but difference is it is 72 F in the house with a warm wood fire burning. In Baja we chill at night and have to wait for the sun to warm us up. Although, here it never really warms up outside and we sure get tired of coats, mitts, scarves, and boots and cabin fever can really take its toll on the liquor cabinet.

Terry28 - 1-13-2013 at 11:11 AM

Zero degrees at 7:30 this morning here in Big Bear, zero as in no degrees!!

A few years back I happened upon the remains of an abandoned rancho in Baja Sur. Found a grave with father & son who died on the same day. There was no indication what kind of tragedy the family suffered that day. :( :?:

We had 11 F this morning and it was 8.6 F at the ski lifts. By 11:20 it was up to 23 F and I had to wait in line behind four people, so we went home with 16,000 ft. of "frozen smoke" for our morning. I don't think I've ever skied better. The surfing equivalent?

Perfect curl, head high with a moderate offshore breeze, every set identical, effortless "paddle" back to the line-up, and no one ever takes your "wave". SWEET!:lol::lol: Oh, and "paddle-up" to the bar.

L.A. NOW Southern California -- this just in « Previous Post | L.A. NOW Home | Next Post » Brrrr: Record cold temperatures set in L.A. on Monday morning January 14, 2013 | 8:10 am increase text size decrease text size 86 8 Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles dropped to their coldest point in 23 years Monday morning, hitting 34 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, setting a record low for the date. If you thought it was especially cold heading to work Monday morning, you're right. At 7 a.m., the temperature was still at 34. The high is expected to hit 56. Temperatures dropped even lower elsewhere, hitting 31 in Redondo Beach, 29 in Claremont and 14 in Lancaster. Temperatures are expected to begin warming Monday night, with the low dipping to 40 downtown. The high is expected to hit 62 degrees Tuesday. The chilly temperatures are the result of a cold air mass that came in last week from Canada, which combined with high pressure in the Pacific and low pressure toward Arizona, creating clear, cold nights and dry air, said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist with the weather service. A number of record lows have been set in the past few days in Southern California, including Sunday's low of 35 downtown and 33 degrees at Camarillo Airport, which tied the record. The last time temperatures dropped to freezing downtown was Jan. 29, 1979. The lowest temperature recorded downtown was 28 degrees, most recently on Jan. 4, 1949.

Not too cold, 50º but the wind is howling so it really isn't a day to go play outside. Forecast is for windy and clear but highs only in the mid 50's

Ateo - 1-15-2013 at 08:28 AM

29 degrees here in Oceanside, says my backyard thermometer. Glad I brought the plumerias inside last week.

woody with a view - 1-15-2013 at 09:59 AM

Sat and Sun nights had cases of Frosty Nipples all up and down the central Baja coastline. Last night in Asuncion wasn't bad at all.

Windy as hell now. A police car is traveling up and down the roads warning the people to bring in their small children and animals so they don't blow away!:!:

Hook - 1-15-2013 at 10:09 AM

No colder than 43 last night. Much above the predicton of 37.

Still 10-15 mph winds, but it's risen to 53F.

It HOWLED last night, stopped and then HOWLED for a period this AM. Seems to be backing off.

Pompano - 1-15-2013 at 10:18 AM

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

Here's a good example. If it hadn't been for that hole in the cloud bank and the rays pointing the way, we would never have found the fishboil.

It's Nice to have Mother Nature looking out for you.

On the Celsius scale water freezes at zero degrees and boils at 100 degrees (100 degrees difference). On the Farenheight scale it freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 210 degrees (180 degress difference).

Since 100 divided by 180 = 0.556 so to convert F temperature to C temperature you just subtract 32 then multiply by .556.
(-2 degrees F -32= -34 x .556 = -18.9 C)

Since 180 divided by 100 = 1.8 you only have to multiply any temperature C by 1.8 then add 32 to get the equivalent F temperature. (-18.9 degrees C x 1.8 = - 34 + 32 = -2 F)

I FORGOT- THIS IS FOR WHEN YOUR NOT NEAR YOUR COMPUTER; OTHERWISE USE THE LINK POMPANO POSTED .

For weather fans.

If you don't already have one on your favorites, here's an easy & quick conversion solution from Celius to Fahrenheit...and vice versa.

http://www.metric-conversions.org/temperature/celsius-to-fah...

Hook - 1-15-2013 at 11:32 AM

I am almost never converting F to C. It's always C to F. Converting Canadians numbers, converting Mexicans numbers to my own antiquated frame of reference.

But I PREFER using Fahrenheit as it divides temperature into more units within the temp range that humans live in. It allows for less use of fractions or decimals.

Yeah, it's easy to remember when water boils and freezes in celsius. But we never experience temps for over half of that range.

Just doubling the C number and adding 30 gets you close enough for most purposes.

That's true, close enough.

And, multiplying by 1.8 and then adding 32 is tough without a calculator. (the multiplying, not the adding)

The true conversion is actually 9/5 + 32. Multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32. Easier in your head if no calculator is around.
