not sure about up there...but here in BCS if you own the house, you take your meter number and a past bill and your ownership papers in...fideicomiso or title and ask to have it in your name. If you are renting, the owner needs to write you a letter with their permission to put it in your name.

If the reason you need the bill in your name is for a proof or residence, like for a bank account, it doesnt matter that it is not in your name. We have given people our electricity bill to use and it worked...just tell them you are renting.

Willardguy, Our bill pay person said it reduce our capital gains if we, or our children ever decide to sell.

Even if you are renting and the major utilities are in the landowners name, most likely the phone and internet will be in yours.

In San Felipe, I needed to show that the casa was ours. Fidi, FM3/2 and we had electricity.

If you don't own the property and you are renting, you will need a letter from the owner that you are renting the property and have the right to have the electricity.

FYI, for anyone asking why it matter if the electricity is in your name, it is important because a friend of mine was charged for the last renters electricity because he didn't pay for several months. He was able to show when he moved in and was able to argue the charges.

We own the property and it is in a fidecomiso, and we have electricity. They just said it should be changed for capital gains purposes. I think it is done in ensenada, but im not sure. Thanks, Folks.

For some reason, utility bills help show residency.
