Flights from Baja Sur to Guatemala?

oladulce - 1-13-2013 at 09:41 AM

Wish I were planning a vacation but unfortunately my Dad's had a recurrence of cancer and is undergoing radiation therapy in Guatemala (where he resides) and we feel the need to visit within the next month or so. I don't have experience flying from Baja Sur to a non-US destination.

Any tips for online search/ travel sites for flights from Baja to Central America, airlines, etc? Will I need to break up my online search for the flight from Baja to Mexico City or Guadalajara (on Volaris, for example) and then find another flight from mainland to Guatemala City?

La Paz airport is closer and preferred (I think?), but is Cabo easier or have other benefits that would warrant the extra drive-time? We will need parking for our truck for the 2 weeks we're gone.

thanks

You need to go through Mexico City, I think Interjet flies there (Guatamala), AeroMexico definitely and I am not sure about Volaris.

If you have an ENSEN or INAPAM old age card (60 years old) there are whopping discounts (50%) on lots of trunk airlines that operate in the tropics.

Interjet is now age 65 and a 20% discount

I use Orbitz and use the book multiple flights feature, you can put in your flight time preferences so you don't end up with a brutal schedule. Book your flight from La Paz, it's much more laid back and convenient than SJD. I usually end up on Copa or Taca. Orbitz also has a phone app to keep track of your flights and hotels which allows you to check on your flight status.

kayak.com is also a good site.

I usually book an early afternoon flight from La Paz to Mexico City, with a flight the following afternoon to Central America so I can enjoy the city for a night and not have to get up brutally early, but you will also be able to get to Guatemala City in one day if you get a morning flight from La Paz.

Thanks for the responses.

I thought you might have personal experience monoloco-gracias. Glad to know about La Paz. It would be great to do all the flying in one day if we can cuz we'll have a 4 hr bus ride from Guatemala City, and then a boat ride down the river to get to his house.

Good luck and safe travels.

A four hour bus ride and then a trip down river. That sounds like quite the adventure. My best wishes to your dad, and as monoloco said, good luck and safe travels.

Thank you for the well wishes for my Dad. He's very confident in his Guatemalan doctors. His Radiation/oncology specialist and the treatment facility is surprisingly (to me at least) modern and sounds very reputable.
