Heavy Duty Roof Rack on San Diego Craigslist

Curt63 - 1-13-2013 at 09:51 AM

Hola Nomads,

I have never seen this rack and I do not know the owner. Caveat Emptor!

But, if you are setting up a sturdy baja rig, this type of rack may be useful. I built a custom rack for my truck and it takes a lot of skill, time and $$$. This appears to be a good value for a serious rack.

With the exception of the vertical expanded metal, it is identical to the rack that came on my Callen camper shell. I ordered it in 1990 for my then new Toyota 4x4 PU.

after having several racks over the years, i now put heavy stuff low inside back of suv and light stuff or bulk/low density stuff (board/bikes) on roof. really like the pods, can hold lots, and stuff is clean/dry upon arrival. also like pod because enclosure keeps items on roof from being bug splattered mess upon arrival.

Managed to fit this plus one more dirt bike and 10hp engine on the truck w/o a trailer.

Been looking at getting one of these:

I know it's not heavy duty, but just looking to store some lightweight stuff up top.

Curt, that beer opener shows the depths of planning that went into your rack.

Whenever possible, we put roof rack items in large black trash bags, then into zippered nylon roof rack bags. everything arrived, clean, dry and intact.

Something that works great is a "hitchmount basket rack". They are normally used to attach to your truck hitch, it measures at 2'x4' They work great as roof racks. They sell everywhere on the net but the best/cheapest is at Harborfreight Tools($60). I mounted it lengthwise on my Yakima crossbars(with basic U bolt hardware sold at any hardware store). That way I can still put my surfboards on one side of the crossbars, and the basket is on the other side for wood/gas cans.
Looking back, I wish I would have painted it with a good Rhino Liner type of paint, its gotten pretty rusted over the last 4 years.
