Trying to book a room for one night in Gonzaga Bay on the 24th this month...had a friend call and ask in spanish

http://www.alfonsinasresort.com/

Said none for the night. Any other rooms in the bay? Or should we just stop in San Felipe. we are driving that side down and accross ending up in Guerrero Negro
SF will be alright , looks like more choices, just thought I would ask if there were any other places in the bay

nbacc - 1-14-2013 at 03:18 PM

Don't know about Gonzaga bay as far as places to stay but SF is not that far away........many choices.

Bob and Susan - 1-14-2013 at 03:33 PM

i think you are making a mistake driving that way
texas to cabo

that dirt road across baja is going to beat the crapola out of your car
i dont care what these guys are telling you

you would be much better off taking the easy way
usa roads and cross at tecate...to ensenada then south to cabo

staying in san felipe one night isnt a vacation

TMW - 1-14-2013 at 03:33 PM

El Sacrificio at Gonzaga Bay has rooms, actually cabins, to rent. I don't have a phone numbe to call, maybe David K does.

yup! as usual bob is spot on. leave your car at the border and take a helicopter directly to the 5 star playa frambes lighthouse resort! swimmin pools, movie stars . really nothing to see in between and when you return your car will be sparkling clean!
;););)

Oh yea, what a beautiful drive thru the crowded roads and slow trucks to and thru San Quintin...love it every time...

Make sure you bring Mommy along.

San Felipe has plenty of empty hotels, places for good food and drinks on the Malecon (water) for the evening. Get up at dawn and drive to Gonzaga (3 miles of dirt) on mostly asphalt then about 35 or so miles of dirt road that for the most part won't beat your car to death unless your driving a piece of crap that isn't gonna be a joy on either asphalt or dirt. Have way more fun seeing some real Baja for a fun experiance!

At Gonzaga Campo Sacrificio has cabaņas and a small restaurant.

Are you just saying that because he actually has a "car" and not a truck.

 above

San Felipe is one hell of a nice town BTW.....dont let anyone fool you about that. Many nice hotels with great eateries.

That drive is perfect for a car or truck. ( Not a low height car). Go slow on the grade between Coco's and Mex 1. Many of us have done that drive a hundred times.

Watch out for that Mulege BCS....area....full of floods and mudslides.......rockyazz roads. Cheap motels and cheap hookers too. Staying in Mulege BCS one night isnt a vacation

Bob and Susan - 1-15-2013 at 06:38 AM

i agree one night in ANY place in baja is not a vacation...
so you need to choose wisely

i travel baja many times a year...
last year i drove to texas and back to mulege twice

the goal here is cabo with motels in between...
not a camping vacation

services are Non-existant from the sea of cortez to the hwy 1
the road is rough

i would avoid this route for THIS person

san felipe is a nice place but not the direction i would take to get to cabo

measomsan - 1-15-2013 at 09:07 AM

Well always love the input from the boys. I have driven to the TJ side down.

The idea here is to get off road some. Not to brag but have new FJ Toyota. Fitted with all off road stuff, loaded just for this trip.

I'm doing bucket list stuff. have a house in Cabo area for going on 4 years but want some off road Baja stuff. My neighbor in Cabo ( built there 20ty years ago ) is going with me. He always wanted to se the other side.

So not worried about beating up the ride, more see Baja

This is a great resource for info, thanks nomads

desertcpl - 1-15-2013 at 09:50 AM

if thats your ride, by all means go thru Gonzaga bay

and have a great Vacation in San Felipe, its a great place to stay for one night or several
the last time we stayed at the El Cortez which is on the beach, great restraunt on premises and the Bare Foot Bar just right out side our door.
had a great dinner at a must do restruant Chuy's also

We checked out El Sacrificio in July 2011, and left quickly for more luxury at a lower price, in El Rosario... just not as nice a view as staying at Gonzaga Bay.

Go to Alfonsina's first. They have some rooms (besides the motel) that may be available, ... if the motel is really full. Antonio is the manager at Alfonsina's. Photos of Sacrificio in my trip report from July 4th weekend, 2011.

El Sacrificio photos, July 2011

David K - 1-15-2013 at 06:05 PM

Eduardo (shirtless) was the man in charge... there were several other men staring at us... the creep factor builds. Eduardo was nice... he tells us the rooms are 'refrigerated' (solar power AC)... and the rate is $60 (dollars)...

See photos also posted by 'Preston' here on Nomad.

edm-1 (Art) RV'd at Sacrificio beginning the same day we were there in 2011. He posted photos and had a good time there, from what I recall.

The meals at Alfonsina's..........worth the drive :-) The cook there will prepare your daily caught fish for your meal too.....

Do be warned...and most of us love it.....there are no locks on the motel room doors.

Exciting...........

you might try this also, when you get to Alfonsinas and they tell you they are full,, reach in your pocket and pull out a $20.00 bill and lay it on the counter,, you might be surprised, I have used this for years in MX, when the front desk gives me to WE are Full

measomsan - 1-16-2013 at 02:21 PM

That is good to know, cash is king ....

desertcpl - 1-16-2013 at 02:27 PM

and time permits, you really need to stay in both places
San Felipe and Gonzaga

David K - 1-16-2013 at 02:34 PM

I would meet with Antonio and let him see you are an okay guy before you do any 'gringo tricks' like offer him a bribe. After you are told there are no rooms, make some eye contact and ask again... Did you try calling/ leaving a message to reserve on the phone numbers provided?

Dk
I understand what your saying, but the truth is even when you make reservations, you can be turned away, I have heard that this goes on alot at Alflys, I am sure you know that
and I have experienced this also in MX, its not uncommon at all to lose your room

David K - 1-16-2013 at 03:06 PM

Yes indeed... but then is the $60 room instantly an $80 room, or is the $20 bill a deposit? :o

Having known Antonio for over a dozen years, (and not real well that he remembers me, I don't think), I would try the 'show him your're not a jerk' and just a humble vacationer approach, before flashing dinero. Just the same as when you are pulled over in Tijuana... flashing bribe money is the last resort if you didn't do anything wrong. Antonio is a real nice person once he knows you.

Baja Angel and I pulled up and walked into Alfonsina's on New Year's Day (2005)... her first time there, and over 2 years since I was last there... Antonio treated us to Margaritas, on the house... We were just passing through, not staying or eating there. Happy New Year, Gonzaga Bay style!

desertcpl - 1-16-2013 at 03:24 PM

DK

its really does no purpose to debate this with you

guess you didnt really understand my post on this

David K - 1-16-2013 at 03:26 PM

I agreed with you, no debate intended... I just wanted the newbie to try the non-bribing approach first... Thank you for your suggestions!

rts551 - 1-16-2013 at 04:09 PM

Antonio is known for taking reservation bribes (Or at least trying to).
