Botanizing around Mulege since the flood

ecomujeres - 1-20-2013 at 07:50 PM

Hola Nomads:

It's been a great season for botanizing in Mulege after all the summer rains and then the flood. I've been busy wandering around the area, looking for as-of-yet undocumented species (some of them even aliens!).

A unfortunate mishap in December has kept me away from most of my wanderings and I've not been able to lead plant walks. Hope to start those by February.

Meanwhile, I've been sharing some of my experiences with my fellow UC Berkeley Botanical Garden volunteers (and staff) in their monthly newsletter.

My "blog" or field notes are available here if you want to see what's up with the plants and see some nice photos:

Enjoy!

Thanks for the link, I will check in regularly! We also noticed the phenomenal vegetation from last summer while on our annual October trip. We ended up going to Mulege and Loreto because the San Francisquita Road from Bahia de Los Angeles was trashed from the rain, and I'll bet that beautiful north sloping drainage as you climb over the hills to the El Arco-San Francisquita Road was exploding with exciting plant growth. The only bad part of it all was my hay fever allergies wrecked me along the road between Mulege and Loreto!! Small price to pay for the display!

Very enjoyable.

De nada! It certainly was a great summer. I only wish I had been able to spend some time south of Mulege in the Fall. We were thinking about doing it in late November before we left for the Symposium in Ensenada, but didn't have time. Then I fell and injured my shoulder while up there and that put an end to any ideas about getting out in the field beyond the immediate Mulege town limits for short forays! We're thinking about an overnight trip to San Ignacio shortly, to see all the lupines and other annuals that have been going wild.

I hear you on the allergies, but I find that the only plants that really bother me are the palms and grasses here in town when in full bloom. I'm lucky that most plants don't affect me, just all that blasted dirt/dust in the air in the winter is what gets me and my nasal passages.

Thanks too to everyone else for the comments/compliments. Stay tuned for next month.

it was those grasses that got me! Didn't bring Clariton, why would I on a Baja trip!

Now that's a trip report!

Mulegena - 3-22-2013 at 09:42 PM

What a fine blog, Debra. Thanks.
You make the subtle desert beauty come alive.

There's another walk this next Friday in Mulege?

[Edited on 3-23-2013 by Mulegena]

ecomujeres - 3-22-2013 at 09:53 PM

Thanks Mulegena!

No walk the 28th, given that it's easter Friday and there's going to be a lot of people out and about all over the place. Rather not be somewhere and have a bunch of crazed or drunk or 9 year old ATVers come flying over a hill or dune.

Call me if you want to go out one day into the field with me if you have time this week.

And to other Nomads, if you just looked and had problems seeing the enlarged photos, something happened between the time I uploaded and reviewed and posted the message. Currently rectifying the problem.

ecomujeres - 3-22-2013 at 10:00 PM

Large photo versions all fixed! Enjoy!

Hola Nomads:

Forgot to announce that the newest edition (May) is available at:

Enjoy!

Mexitron - 5-7-2013 at 09:01 AM

ecomujeres---so all the Cercidiums have been thrown into Parkinsonia "officially"?

ecomujeres - 5-7-2013 at 09:27 PM

Mexitron, so it seems.

P. microphyllum
P. aculeata
P. praecox

I still don't have the palo verde P. or C. peninsulare straight. There are several different names for it and questions about whether it is this or that species or a different one, yatta, yatta. You know those P-nche taxonomists.

Got to check my Baja Plant Guide book to see what Jon has as the latest name for it.

DavidE - 5-8-2013 at 12:36 PM

Very few things I commit to disk. Your reports are ones that I do.

ecomujeres - 5-19-2013 at 10:40 PM

Hey DavidE:

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I´m glad that you´re enjoying them. The newest, and last one for the season (June) is available at:
