As many of you know I recently spent 6 months in Baja California working on a travel documentary on the off the beaten path locations along the
peninsula. I had all my video and photos backed up onto two drives and one of them started to make some noise and stopped working. Before I had a
chance to make a copy from my second drive it failed as well. 600 GBs of video and photography, not to mention the cost of the entire trip...gone. I
was heartbroken. I brought the drives to a data recovery center and he took a few days to look them over. Good news is there are no scratches on one
of the disks but the head is gone. That means it's recoverable. Bad news....it's going to cost me $850.
Here's the kicker, I work in IT and should know better. I thought I had my bases covered with two copies of the data and I still managed to screw
myself. It can happen to anyone, even the geeks.
You should still always keep two copies and where possible, keep a copy on your SD card as well if you can. Something I will be looking into in the
future is cloud storage. The only issue with that is finding a place with fast enough internet to allow me to upload many GBs of information in one
sitting.
Ah well, delays on the DVD folks but it will be done before I leave again in August for Trip #2 to Mexico. On this trip I will shoot a documentary on
the west coast of Canada/US, take a sojourn to Burning Man and then back to Baja to visit some of the places I couldn't get to last time around and
see some of the many good people I met on my last trip.

I have faithfully backed up my computer onto a separate portable hard drive, my computer crashed and when the IT guys went to reload it, the backup

Ya it sucks but like Dennis said, it's $850 to get it back. I'll be buying something like this for my next time out. It's a portable drive bay that
takes two drives and they will mirror each other.

One of the reasons I like Picasa is that I automatically upload all of my pics and video. I recently lost a number of my pics and easily downloaded
my lost files. Granted this only works for my photos but it's worth the five bucks a year I pay for the additional storage.

I use a separate hard drive, but what I really like is Carbonite on line. It is not expensive and it automatically backs up everything. When I had
one computer crash it was quite easy to put everything on the new computer from Carbonite. I know, I sound like a commercial, but it saved me from
data recovery charges.
Unfortunately, I don't have my laptop covered by Carbonite, and I have pictures I need to get transferred to my desktop or back up hard drive so
Carbonite will grab them --- it on my list --- I need to bump it to the top of the list.
Bajaboy, I don't think picasa will accept a RAW format. So far I have not found a photo storing sight that will accept RAW? Anyone know of one?
