If you have ever seen this TV show you know how good it is. And the host Jose Wejebe is one of the things that made it so good.
The other thing was his boat "Spanish Fly".

"Spanish Fly" just arrived at its new home in San Quintin, Baja California.

I learned today that Jose Wejebe was killed piloting his private airplane last year. Breaks my heart.

Here's the beginning of a new episode for "Spanish Fly" I'm sure Jose would approve.

We were at the Molino Viejo dock the other day when Julio and Oscar brought it in. Carl was invited on board, it's beautiful! Cameras built in below the water line! All sorts of bells and whistles on it. I'm sure we'll see Julio fishing on it often.

That's not the "Spanish fly" that I bought in Tijuana in 1968!!

I'm bumping this back to the top.

I am a bit surprised it hasn't gotten a little more attention. If you click on the link at the bottom of the first post there are some beautiful photos of the boat and also a link that shows Jose and Julio fishing the boat in Baja for an episode of the show.
Not sure if people don't realize but I checked and a boat similar to this is about $400,000 used. Probably $500,000 or more new.
Keeping in mind that the new owner is a farmer in San Quintin. San Quintin has some very wealthy Mexican farmers.
I know San Quintin pretty good and I am still blown away by this story. Julio's last boat was a 31 Contender and he towed that up and down the peninsula if you can believe it. It was wider than a lane of the highway and he used an escort vehicle to tell him when trucks were coming.
I doubt he can do that with a 39 SeaVee. But who knows...

Jose died almost a year ago! Where you been fish guy? Were you a fan of his, of his show or just his boat.

"Investigators learned that on April 6 Wejebe, 54, took off from the Everglades City runway and rose upwards of 150 feet when the plane took a sharp right turn and started nose-diving.

According to the report, Wejebe's plane crashed 275 yards from the runway, where winds were estimated at 14 mph."

A year is a bit of an exaggeration but I get your point. Don't know why I never saw anything about it. Wasn't anything on here even though he does have a Baja connection.

No I didn't die.
Almost went to jail but I fought the law and I won.
And I have stayed off almost all chat boards while I tried to improve my manners a little. Still working on it.

I was a fan of his, of his show and of his boat. Didn't know he had a plane but it figures.
I just figured I wasn't finding the show. Didn't know it had ended in such a dramatic fashion.

But this is more than just about Jose.

there was a long and heartfelt thread about Jose when he died ... he had just been to stay with us while filming and was planning on returning, to vacation here with his girlfriend....we really enjoyed meeting him. He was bigger than life itself.

I tried to find our "good bye to Jose" thread but didn't come up with anything ..... odd ....

Ok. I know why I missed out on the 2012 threads. I relocated from Newport Beach Ca to Everett Wa in late March and started a new job with Boeing. I was in about 8 weeks of very intensive training so didn't have much time for internet surfing.
Sometimes life gets in the way of important things like fishing, watching fishing shows and talking about fishing.
I loved watching Walker's Cay Chronicles with Flip also. He and Jose are my heros and I aspire to live the way they do/did.
So I have my dream, my boat and fish camp in San Quintin and a good job that will allow me to retire reasonably young.
It seems even more urgent for me to dial in my fly to San Diego, rent a car and drive down to San Quintin and patrol my little fish camp, play with my boat, visit the Old Mill, Jardiens and say hi to my friends there. And jet back to Seattle for work.
If I do it right I'll buy myself a decent light aircraft and keep it at Brown Field in San Diego and fly to wherever the fishing is hot and the beer is cold.
And when I retire I'll park it in the front yard of my fishcamp in SQ where it will be ready for action at all times.

Nice looking boat and an even nicer story about her new owner.

One thought from looking at the pictures; make sure to put the radar on Stand-by when climbing up to the tower helm station. The radar acts like a mild microwave and builds up heat in the parts of our bodies that don't have enough blood flow to allow the heat to disipate. One vulnerable area is the eyes, and the other is the frequent focus of humerous video clips.

I was a radarman in the U.S. Navy aboard a minesweeper. When I had to climb the antenna mast I made sure nobody could turn it on and cook me like an Egg McMuffin up there.

One time somebody threw the switch to rotate the antenna and knocked me off the mast 30 ft to deck. No big deal. I was used to hardships.

Deceleration trauma isn't something you can get used to. ;)

Obviously those navy radars have a ton more output than a wee civilian model, but it's good pratice to keep your eyes and other vital organs out of the way of the microwave energy coming off the radar.
