Driving Ensenada to Guerero Negro?

Retireded - 1-25-2013 at 12:48 PM

According to Mapquest, it takes 11.25 hours, I don't think my better half can handle that long a drive in one day, so can anyone suggest any good, inexpensive hotel/motel at or a little beyond the halfway point? Preferably with a good place to eat nearby. We need to be in GN late in the day March 8 and so will leave on the 6th, hopefully early morning.:?:

Alan - 1-25-2013 at 01:14 PM

Not much at the halfway point (Catavina) other than the old Desert Inn which I think is now called Missiones Catavina that runs around $85/night. Before that would be El Rosario with several places, Baja Cactus, Tourist Hotel or Baja's Best but that is only a few hours south of Ensenada.

Retireded - 1-25-2013 at 01:19 PM

sounds like we may want to put a matress and sleeping bags in the back of our suv and pack some grub.

David K - 1-25-2013 at 01:21 PM

El Rosario... Baja Cactus or Turista motels. That is halfway.

MMc - 1-25-2013 at 01:23 PM

San Quintin (<4> hours) has some nice places. El Rosario (4-5 hours) has places good places. Catavina (5-6 hours) has a good place and a bad place. The good place is often full with whale watching groups. The pink place is best avoided. Bay of LA has great places to stay (7-8 hours and 40 mile out of the way) We tend to do this cause it's just a cool place. Santa Rosalitta (7-8 hours) has a hotel. I have not stayed there but plan to.
There has been plenty written on all of the towns and their hotels just do a search in Baja Accommodation Reviews and you decide. Your mileage and driving might very.
I would not count on Cativina without a reservation.

ensenada to guerrero negro is 8 hours...not 11 and a half

shari - 1-25-2013 at 01:55 PM

I think you will be able to do it easily if you leave ensenada early in the am...I agree that it is 8 hours.

umpqua - 1-25-2013 at 01:58 PM

Left the border at TJ at 8am and was in GN by dark (5pm) driving at a "safe" speed. Stayed at the Cowboy Hotel in GN. Nice place and good chow.

Retireded - 1-25-2013 at 02:01 PM

Thanks All, I'm sure we will get there on schedule, What may be 8 hours for normal people could easily be 12 for others, but who wants to be mornal lol I do not consider myself to be a very fast or very slow driver, but my wife is often complaining I'm going too fast when in face I'm below the posted limit, so I'll allow extra time in order to make it comfortable.

Retireded - 1-25-2013 at 02:02 PM

That should have been 'in fact', not 'in face'. LOL

Pompano - 1-25-2013 at 02:22 PM

Retireded,

It looks like you have your route planned very thoroughly and will make it to GN without any mishap.

A tip: How do you know when it is time to "hang up the car keys"?

I WOULD SAY WHEN YOUR DOG HAS THIS LOOK ON HIS FACE!

It's all fun..enjoy your trip!

vandenberg - 1-25-2013 at 02:26 PM

Guerrero Negro to San Quintin is 250 miles and San Quintin to Ensenada 120 miles for a total of 370 miles.
Even averaging 45 mph you'l get there in about 8 hrs.

Retireded - 1-25-2013 at 02:35 PM

That looks like my wife's dog 5 years ago:lol:

road timing

captkw - 1-25-2013 at 05:21 PM

Hola,, I have found that in these latter years, Ensenada to S.Q. is a long and mostly slow drive!! looks easy on the map, but traffic,, tope's,stop light's and signs..Its the slowest part of the journey..past S.Q. is a good run, then the check point.... once you get past the "curve its open till catavina... I'll sometimes pull over till I see a semi and then craw thru catavina with the semi behind me running a block for U know who !!! LOL....K&T

Bob and Susan - 1-25-2013 at 05:33 PM

actually the road from ensenada to SQ is fast...all newer...not slow at all

David K - 1-25-2013 at 05:38 PM

Ensenada to El Rosario (150 miles) is usually 4 hours drive... unless you just get lucky and miss all the small town and farm traffic.. I did it in 3 once or twice...

El Rosario to Guerrero Negro (220 miles) is 4 hours, unless they rebuild a section of the highway, a semi wrecks, the military checkpoint is backed up, so best top plan on 5 hours.

Either way, El Rosario has the most options close to the exact halfway point (Baja Cactus Motel, Turista Motel, Baja's Best B&B, Espinoza's Las Cabanas motel, Sinahi motel).

San Quintin has more, but that's only 2-3 hours from Ensenada.

Cataviņa (230 miles from Ensenada) is hit or miss to get a room at the nice Mision de Cataviņa hotel. Across the highway and just north is the Cabanas Linda motel... best avoided until we get some consistent good reports back.

San Vicente to S.Q. Is hell nowdays

captkw - 1-25-2013 at 05:42 PM

Marc - 1-25-2013 at 06:16 PM

Cataviņa will be full up now with whale watchers. Best bet is El Rosario.

BajaBlanca - 1-25-2013 at 06:20 PM

I agree with the capt - the way to san quintin is usually a slow nightmare ... and after that much, much nicer.

retireded - how far south are you going ? Will you have a chance to make a side trip to Asuncion or La Bocana ?

we are going to GN to join Shari for a whale watching excursion, then thinking possibly a side trip to BOLA to look over a property. I guess Asuncion would also not be far out of the way, and we may possibly drive that way. So much Baja, so little time. We really have not seen much of it, but love all we have seen. I wish I could have come here years earlier.

RETIRED.. lol...

Were you referring to the note about Catavina? I let my wife talk to you know who for me. She liked a scene from a vern fonk insurance ad up in Wa. Where the guy tells the cop"i wasn't speeding, ask my wife" and she tells the cop "I never argue with my husband when he is drinking"

Hola, you have a great sense of humor !!.doubled is a "radio" term that means we both TX (transmitted) at the same time...and page (1) is self explainatory..when after so many post are written,, the computer starts a new page...so, when we doubled,, the next post came up on a new page (2) and you response, so fast that I was letting you know the chain of events...Not a big matter..But a good example of why us Radio geek's talk on a radio the way we do...are friend, BOB must have a heavy foot as 8hrs would be A insane ride...look around on the top left for 1,2 in blue and start on 1 and reread the whole thread and your get the picture !! have A Great trip..Keith & the Famous Lil Tasha

Thanks for the response...if you lookdown to the left..you should see a blue #1 And a blk #2..thats says we are now on page # 2........I'm learning this stuff, slowly by the day myself and have a lot to learn about blogs and cyber space !! That is what I was talking about. I am still showing only one page, still. There are no numbers where they would be if there were more pages. Just when I think I'm starting to understand, someone changes things. Now I feel cheated. You have 2 pages and I only have one.

That's because retireded has changed the default # of posts per page in his profile. And while most here will now see this thread as into the second page (default setting is 20 posts per page), retireded still sees it as one page because of his current post per page setting.

Same # of posts, just for some it's broken up into multiple pages, and for others it could still be one page.

Let's not even get started about how the banner ads at the top of the page are custom tailored to the viewers interests.

One Nomad quit posting over that one................

captkw - 1-26-2013 at 10:52 AM

I saw that too and I am not using my "start page" proxy on this site. that makes me invisible..but,I like the Hot chicks in My banner ads..hard to decide between Russian or philapino chicks..LOL...Doug is just trying to make a living like the rest of us.....not all nomads are retired.....K&T

Ken, I think that was Skeet, but he came back...?

Ateo - 1-26-2013 at 10:59 AM

Skeet prowls in OT from time to time, often asking why rap music is so loud and horrible.

Ateo - 1-26-2013 at 11:01 AM

Seems like Ensenada to San Q is more like 3 hours. I can leave Oceanside at 12PM and arrive in San Q around 5PM. Just in time for a cold cerveza at the Garden.

LOL,LOL,LOL

captkw - 1-26-2013 at 11:20 AM

That's FUNNY !!
