I think the shortest and easiest way for me to pull-off the southern loop of this trip will be to make the turn at Loreto for San Javier, then down
the mountain west to the pavement then go north for our return to La Purisima. I want to leave through Scorpion Bay, the way to San Ignacio Lagoon.
I've been over all of it before except for Javier west to the pavement (easy right?), and Scorpion Bay to the Lagoon, which road is recommended for
my Dodge 3/4 4x4 with cab-over on that route at this time?

The Javier to Santo Domingo (Hwy. 53) section will likely be the roughest part Perry... There aren't a lot of posts about it, but the Baja 1000 did go

I did that last year on a motorcycle and unless this last summer's rains wiped it out, it would be passable with a good 4WD. The Mexicans do it with
old beater pickups, but there are some tough sections and slow going. As you get near the Hwy, it is like a dirt freeway.vgabndo - 1-25-2013 at 06:15 PM

We did San Juanico to San Ignacio last year. Toyota Tundra towing a 10 `Wells Cargo. Overall pretty easy except for a couple short bumpy hills. One
caveat though, never wander off the beaten track thru the miles and miles of mudflats. Just two feet off the road can be a bottomless pit as evidenced
by the many old tire tracks leading into mud pits. The worst part by far was the well traveled section from the lagoon to San Ignacio with nasty
washboard. Overall it was a very pretty , very remote stretch of road that gave the feeling of old Baja. Glad we did it but probably won`t again. Next
time we`d like to try San Juanico over to Mulege. Anyone have thoughts on that?ElCap - 1-26-2013 at 09:20 AM
Last April we drove over the mountains from La Ballena (just north of Cadaje), up to San Miguel, then turned north at El Aquajito towards the old
mission ruins of Guadalupe, then down the Pie de la Cuesta (steep!), through San Jose de Magdelena, and hit Mex 1 just south of San Bruno. If you go
straight at el Aguajito you will end up in Mulege - I have never gone this way, but I think it is a more-travelled route. We were in two
high-clearance Landcruisers, and it wasn't too bad. We took three days and camped and explored, and visited a few ranchos. Incredible vistas,
mountains, and desert flora & fauna. Much of the 'road' was essentially the arroyo, so after all the rains this season & Hurricane Paul, I
imagine it could be pretty bad. One of these days I'll try and post a trip report, but anyone can U2U me for specific details.
