road update on paving to Gonzaga

tripledigitken - 1-26-2013 at 10:15 AM

We decided to go back home through Gonzaga after our recent trip. The mileage from Mex 1 to the end of the new pavement at Bufeo is 40 miles. We covered that in 2 1/2 hours in our Subaru. High clearance vehicles are not req'd.

nice!

David K - 1-26-2013 at 10:27 AM

Ken, when was this?

bbbait (Wayno)sent me photos of/ and said the pavement had reached the bridge under construction (near Papa Fernandez' road)... 3 miles north of the Gonzaga Pemex. Bufeo is 8 miles north of the Pemex.

Here is one that shows the end of pavement, and Gonzaga Bay in the background... Jan. 6, 2013:

Ken,
That is a WONDERFUL image --- looks so quiet, calm, peaceful and with nice depth --- almost surreal. Love it.

Nice the Subaru did well ---- do you still have those terrible Continental tires on and did they make it intact? If so, you sure have better luck than we do. :D

Glad the paving is moving forward.

David,

We went through Jan 24th. The pavement stops at bridge as shown, you are detoured about one mile north of bridge before you get onto the pavement. It will be some time before the bridge and rock excavation at the south bridge abutment is complete. Survey crews were working between Rancho Grande turn off and Coco's.

Note to night drivers!!!! Mexican road engineers like to excavate vertical cuts and in many cases the rock is sloughing off and has filled the brow ditches and spilled out into the newly paved road. They could keep a road crew busy cleaning up those ditches for about 30 miles. As discussed at length here, the road getting paved it is a bitter/sweet milestone for us.............:(:)

I think we will be making this our routine now, do a last night in Gonzaga. By the way, the shrimp tacos at Alfonsina's were excellent. (3 for 100 pesos including beans)

Thanks!

No we got the Yokohama Geolanders and are very happy with them. We did over 120 miles offroad this trip and they never lost grip in the marbles.

Ken

(This is my first trip using the Sony NEX 7. Still getting used to it's differences from the Nikon)

The Geolanders have been good to us --- sure better than 4 flats in less that 10,000 miles all from tiny, tiny items. It was only a matter of time until you parted ways with the Continentals.

Looks to me you are getting real used to that Sony --- that is just a wonderful image.

Just got back today. The rain did a number on the climb out of the wash where they are building the bridge. Slick mud. Jack knifed semi almost blocking the road. Also three days ago someone heading south at night went through the barrels with no skid mark. Rolled it and crashed hard.

Thank you Ken!

Could you tell if the highway is going to bipass Coco's to the west as reported?

I only saw the crew next to the road. I can't recall how many miles north of Coco's the survey crew was.

In the interest of correctness, it is "bypass" with a "y"

Skipjack Joe - 1-28-2013 at 08:39 AM

I agree with Diane. That's just a stunning image.

David K - 1-28-2013 at 08:42 AM

Thanks.... I will remind you that I don't spell well and I don't correct anyone's English here. It is only Baja place names I help with. Geography has always been an interest.

CortezBlue - 1-28-2013 at 09:12 AM

Hmmm, literacy, geography and Spanish spelling?

One out of three isn't bad, stick with your core!

Sound a little cranky, were your crumpets a little stale this morning?:)

Nice photo

I have been messing with Neutral Density Filters as of late and this would have been a great shot to take a 30 second photo to get the cloud movement

Going down this weekend hopefully there will be some great clouds as well so I can practice

tripledigitken - 1-28-2013 at 10:46 AM

CortezBlue,

They are fun to play with (neutral density filters). I used one (8 stop) on this photo of Leavitt Falls to blur the waterfall. Some of the shots with the blurry water and sky are a bit overdone to my taste, though.

Thanks for the comment.

DianaT - 1-28-2013 at 10:54 AM

Ken,
I like that waterfall picture and the water. I agree that sometimes water is so smooth looking that it no longer looks real --- of course, sometimes the surreal look is good.

Sometimes I really like a fast speed with water to stop it as that is what I am seeing, but that seems to be somewhat of a no, no today --- rules are made to be broken. :P

Did you use one exposure for the waterfall picture? I really like the light.
