February is National Heart Month

I was really excited to see Graham MacKintosh going for another stroll around Baja at 61 years old. Exercise has many positive effects on a person, but one very important thing it does is improve collateral circulation. As we age, arteries get clogged up with cholesterol plaques. But if you put physical demands on your body, it will grow new arterioles. And if you keep active, they will be a source of alternative circulation if you have a stroke and keep you alive.

I am very excited that older as well as younger people in Baja have decided to start walking. I have started walking up a few hills in my neighborhood here in Valle Verde, and hill walking can really get the heart pumping. My legs burn climbing them, but at the end of the walk I can see all of Ensenada and La Bufadora at the top of the hills. You can also see things while walking you never see by car, and meet new people. That's why I wholeheartedly support walkers young and old for even attempting to get out there. Happy Heart month, and don't forget to keep your blood pressure under control and take a baby aspirin a day if you aren't on a blood thinner. These two things will keep you alive and prevent a heart attack or stroke. Oh yes, make sure you cuddle up with someone or something you love, and Happy Valentine's Day!! Another way to take stress off the heart.
