Since I no longer live in La Paz, I often read El Sudcaliforniano online to feel closer to home. An article in today's edition mentioned that La Paz
currently has a problem with "Gypsies" (gitanas) who wander the city's streets offering to tell one's fortune or read one's palm. Often, when local
residents refuse these services they are cursed at or even attacked by these women. One retired school teacher had a rock thrown at him. The Gypsies
are also known to steal from unsuspecting pedestrians.
I'm going to wager a guess that most foreign residents are spared these nasty encounters because of the language barrier.
Just thought I'd share this tidbit.
