Punta Bufeo

fudscrud - 2-15-2013 at 10:15 AM

Anybody been to Punta Bufeo (10mi. north of Gonzaga) rescently? I have stayed there a few times but the last was in april 2010. Grandma used to run a tight ship around there and always served great meals at the kitchen table and always ready at the time you requested it for. The boys would go out fishing every day and there was always fresh fish served for dinner.
My last visit in '10, only the oldest son (who was not a boy any more) was by himself there and let's just say it wasn't quite the same as with Grandma running things.
I would like to stay there on my journey south vs Alfonsinas which is nice but a little out of my simple life style budjet that I require for the month long trip and I also prefer the little "off the beaten track" places.
Is PB still up and running?

We haven't been down for a while. Last I heard Miguel (Francisca's youngest son) is running the place. I've just sent off an email to a resident there, but it may take a few days to get a reply.

Is your upcoming trip to be soon?

Thank You Allen, I should be there april 2nd.

I haven't heard from the first inquiry I sent, so I'm trying another source. "Beach Mail" can be a bit slow at times, depending on who's in situ.

Thanks, I'm in no big hurry, as a matter of fact, I'm in no hurry at all...

Sounds like you're already in the "Baja Mood".

Well, here's all I have so far. It's not much, but it may help. This is from a friend who alternates spending about six weeks at PB and six weeks NOB.

When I left in late January the motel was open but rarely occupied. Miguel was there but no cook.

I'm still waiting for replies from two others.

He bufeo, is the runway still open at Punta Bufeo Resort? What is available for campers there, palapas maybe?

Of the hundreds of photos taken at Papa Fernandez', Alfonsina's Rancho Grande, Beluga, etc., I don't remember ever seeing ones at Punta Bufeo. I have never driven in to the place, but maybe I have to!!

Now that the paved super highway has arrived at Punta Bufeo's driveway, things will probably begin changing there!?

Yes, I believe it is re-certified.

No palapas unless they've been added recently. Anyone beach-camping is supposed to use the far eastern part up next to the rocks or the western part away from the houses.

David,

I just got back yesterday. The runway is open, and all beach front palapas have been relocated next to the houses.

New road + Sentri pass = less than 4 hours back to Calexico:bounce:

Hey S.

We miss our trips down. Cold up here in ID. :(

From your comment re: palapas I would gather that they still are for use by homeowners and not campers. Is this correct?

Thanks... does that mean they were once for campers, but now are for the homeowners?

bufeo - 2-19-2013 at 07:04 PM

To my knowledge the palapas were always for the homeowners. Occasionally campers would 'squat'.

LOL... thanks.

Allen,

Yes, the palapas in front of the houses have all been either torn down, or relocated to next to the houses.

We miss you and Diana on the beach. Perhaps someday we will head on up your way.

How about some photos of Punta Bufeo? Beach, motel, restaurant, etc. Thanks!

"When I left in late January the motel was open but rarely occupied. Miguel was there but no cook."

This is not good news. This is a nice little place with real Baja flavor but with no meals, this is a no go for me. The great cooking was half the reason to stay there. Perhaps Miguel or another family member will get it going again soon.
Thanks for checking into it Allen.

Given the capricious manner in which PB has hired/fired cooks over the past decade you can always stop in and check the current situation.

I'll most likely stop by and scout it out and tip a cold one with Miguel.

bufeo - 2-21-2013 at 01:27 PM

When you do, I'd appreciate knowing if Francisca's little chapel (in memory of her long-time close friend, "Tio") is still there, more specifically if the stained glass window is intact. It's directly across the entrance to the restaurant.

Also, would you please give our best regards to Miguel and family. We have so many fond memories of our nine years there. Miguel is a genuine amigo.

You might just luck out with a good cook. Francisca was excellent, but as her health failed the restaurant had several replacements. A couple were almost as good as Francisca.

We don't know when we'll get south again...but we will. Too many places have drawn us away from that destination.

If I do (and probably will) stop there, I will send my regards from you Allen.
