I'm going to be in BOLA around the 11th of march and plan to take my surf rod. Can anyone recommend any good spots to fish and any tackle/bait
recommendations. Also interested in any spots along the way back to Ensenada.
I may stay on the gulf side and move back west farther North, No plans carved in stone as yet. It would be an added treat to return home with some
fish to show for the trip.David K - 2-21-2013 at 10:30 AM
La Gringa... on the gravel beach facing Smith Island... When we were out there with Bedman and Emma, he tossed out a line and pulled in a few
easily... It was many years ago, but I think he was catching trigger fish?
Photo that day, at that beach:
Another photo, same area, 3 years later:

Advice from a poor, unlucky fisherman...
Shrimp seems to be the only bait I can count on for "bites".TMW - 2-21-2013 at 11:14 AM
Retireded click on this link and go down half way to Bugman and see what he caught from the shore.
THAT's what I'm hoping to see.redhilltown - 2-21-2013 at 05:53 PM
La Gringa is a good recommendation and try to take the road further north if you can...triggers and groupers here and there. Last October I caught a
Porgy from shore there and it was FINE eating! Using a chrome kroc from what I remember (then again, I catch just about everything on a chrome Kroc.)
Corvina might be around as well. Bringing some squid never hurts (unless the bag opens up in your cooler.....bleeeeech!) Please report back what
you find!Retireded - 2-21-2013 at 07:07 PM
I'll let you know for sure. Hope it a happy report. Thanks for the info.mcfez - 2-22-2013 at 09:22 AM
If you are going to BOLA, you might enjoy taking IN THE SHADOW OF THE VOLCANO with you to read. Written by Mike Humphreville who spent time camping
near La Gringa. David K has them. Good read.David K - 2-22-2013 at 10:55 AM
See the classified ads section of Nomad... The Volcano in the book title is Smith Island (Isla Coronado)...
One of my favorite fishing books is by Tom Miller:

Thanks Guys, If i get hold of half these books, I'll have to let Merry drive to GN so I can read on the way. LOLthebajarunner - 2-22-2013 at 04:31 PM
I always do a little shore fishing at La Gringa on our annual trips.
For a couple years I got triggers, and that was good,
Last year I caught literally dozens of puffers.....
Not good!
If you have a certified Japanese Puffer cleaner in camp I hear they are fine eating,
but if not, they can be quite lethal
At least that is what the gang said around the campfire when I proudly showed them my neat little full stringer....Retireded - 2-22-2013 at 04:38 PM
I used to fish off the rocks at Barnegat Bay, N.J. and caught lots of blowfish. Cleaning them safely, while a must, was very simple and we ate tons
of these tasty morsels. Are the Japanese fish still fighting ww2? lolTMW - 2-22-2013 at 07:10 PM
It depends on the verity. The ones in Baja can be deadly.Retireded - 2-22-2013 at 08:24 PM
I did a little reading on them this afternoon. I think I'll leave them alone.willardguy - 2-22-2013 at 08:37 PM

Don't fool with them - even the pros in Japan make a mistake once in a while.
