Driving miles will be shorter going through SY, but driving time can be much less going through Tecate. Especially if you cross on a Tues, Wed, Thurs, or Fri.
On Sat. Sun, and Mondays the waits can be extended at Tecate.

I actually prefer the toll road along the coast, it is beautiful and it is fast. The biggest challenge, for me, is getting into the right lane to hit San Ysidro. When you leave the toll road you want to follow the signs that show the border and San Diego. When you turn East and are on a four lane, watch the signs carefully and make sure you turn off to the right when you come to the bottom of the first hill. Everything goes easy now till you get closer to the crossing. You have to make a right exactly where the sign says, go to the first major intersection with lights, then turn left. On a bridge that you go under, make sure you do no go to the right even though the sign says that, instead stay in the 2nd lane from the right which will circle up over the bridge and put you in the crossing.

Relax and enjoy the crossing. I like all the vendors and sellers and find the whole process very entertaining. If I had to sit equal time here and Tecate, I would always opt for this crossing. The earlier you get there in the morning, the easier and less wait time you will have. If you wait till noon, it gets brutal.

Once you cross, you are on 805 and ready to fly into Hell A.

Going to L.A.

I think crossing at Otay is faster and Shorter then S.Y. following this route:
1. Toll road to Blvd 2000 (just past Puerto Nuevo)
2. Follow Gratia signs and cross border to 905 west
3. First exit off 905 to 125 toll
4. 125 toll to Santee where it becomes 52 west
5. 52 to I 15 north at Miramar
6. I 15 north to I 10 west to Downtown L.A.
