I'm curious about why Calexico/Mexicali (and perhaps Algodones) isn't a more popular border crossing for those driving to BCS from east of California.
I've always used Tecate from AZ but am not particularly fond of CA 94 nor the town of Tecate itself.
What's travel on Mex 2 and 20 like? road condition? travel time? etc?
Maybe someday Mex 5 will solve the problem, but I think I've got a few more years of travel to wait on that one.

What is Mex 20?
Hwy. 2-D from the Algodones jcn. or Mexicali to Tecate is a good highway, but not as good as I-8 and you have 2 to 3 tolls to pay in Mexico, plus
military checkpoints.
All that makes staying on the U.S. side to Tecate faster/ cheaper.
Naturally, Hwy. 5 still having 38 unpaved miles and 52 deep dip/ vado miles is not appealing to those in passenger cars, big RVs, or pulling trailers.
