Healthcare: cost and quality for US citizen?

walterbyrd - 3-1-2013 at 03:43 PM

What is the healthcare situation for a US citizen? I understand it's fairly affordable.

Is the quality of such healthcare reasonable?

I am in my mid-fifties, but seem to be holding up pretty well. I rarely need any healthcare attention, so far.

Depends

On your current health/medical problems, what you are used to and what you need. Also proximity to the Mexican/US border.

Some care is better, some is worse and some is non-existant

Can't use Medicare down here, most US health insurance policies are not recognized by Mexican health car providers, however there are some other health care options available to you in Mexico.

I have Seguro Social. I'm in my late 50's and the cost is less than $300 per year. When I first signed up 15 years ago I had to have a FM3 and the cost then was less than $200 per year. It goes up as the years go by and you become more aged. It covers all prescriptions, lab work and specialists. I currently go in monthly and the doctors I have been to are friendly and professional.

There is also Seguro Popular at no cost from what I have heard but I don't mind paying what I do because I can afford it.

I don't have insurance in the States but from what I've heard if I have a problem up there, they would have to stabilize and transport me to the border at no cost as I have a policy here in Mexico. I don't know if this is true, I've never had the experience.

I live in Ensenada.
