Looking for one or two to review a novel

sargentodiaz - 3-2-2013 at 11:20 AM

Leatherjacket Soldier (Soldado de Cuera) is the story of Don Fernando Rivera y Moncada, a true Mexican hero.

Rivera enlisted as a common soldier in the unique branch of Spanish cavalry. All were born in New Spain and had their own set of rules and regulations separate from the Spanish Army.

He was sent to Loreto after five years of service and in the next few years served well and caught the attention of the Jesuits. Much to everyone's surprise, when the military commandant of the California's died, Don Fernando was promoted from the rank of Sergeant to Captain and military commandant of the Californias - equal to a modern colonel.

The remainder of his story is equally amazing and I hope I've caught the essence of the man and the times in which he lived and served. I'm not going to spoil things by telling you the ending.

I honestly believe this man's life is something anyone living in Mexico would wish to know. He was a hero that every Mexican can be proud of.

Anyhow - my publisher has editors so, what I'm looking for, is input as to how the novel works for you and does it bring the history to life?

Anyone interested, I have the draft in Adobe Acrobat form for reading.

Not more than 2 or 3 please - I want the rest of you to buy it when it is released

U2U me,
we can discuss this off line

I edited (and then wrote a long chapter) in Bernie Swaim's last book,
It was a very enjoyable project, but editing, and reviewing are two different animals.
I have also done pre-pub reviews on several novels.....

(I was pretty hard on Bernie, but we are still friends)(and I think it was a better book out of all of our joint effort)

Osprey should be able to give you a valuable review.

When will your book be available? I'm saving a place of honor in my library.

Does the critique include spelling assistance??

Spelling and grammar are covered. My weak points. But no one would think to say Get a dictionary. We're here to help, and if you disagree with us, The writer has final choice.

yes this sounds like a very interesting read,, let us all know when its in print and how we can get a copy,,
will you be signing any for us

mulegemichael - 3-2-2013 at 05:19 PM

runner and dove, you both need assistance with spelling/diction but who's counting...????...just let it flow...my problem is, no, ONE of my problems is, i just cannot get by spelling errors and it leaps out at me like it's meant to be...and this from a guy who does not know how to capitilize...or is it capatilize?...or capitilise?....after awhile, they all look wrong.

I am going to post Bernie's book covers on the Baja (Historic Interests) and Literature forum, since we had a little sidebar about Bernie's third book, above.

Your group sounds fun. Do you meet at a restaurant, someone's home, or?

BajaDove - 3-3-2013 at 07:49 PM

We usually meet a someones home during the winter months when we are at peak members. In summer some have started meeting in a restaurant.
We are more comfortable in a home.
