this article is not entirely correct...
you ONLY need permission from the carrier to unlock a phone...
no need to use a company either...its free
just call the carrier

You can also legally unlock it if you buy the phone out of contract (usually full retail). Verizon unlocked my wifes iPhone 4S for free when I called
them. My iphone 5 came unlocked out of the box.
ATT is a different matter. My friend just is paid $1.99 to unlock his AT&T iphone 5.
